Please don't interrupt this as a hostile comment, but....

Actually, in recent years, HOnda had one of the worst clear coat failure between all manufactures.

IIRC there was even a class action lawsuit against Civic and Accords produced in 2003~2006? for their major clear coat failure

Almost all Japanese cars are known for every soft paint... but I from my conversation with some detailers, HOnda paint seems to be the worst to handle.

Garbage. I tried it on mine. Comes off like water. I'm going to get hardcore and have a new front bumper coated with line-x to deal with the crap paint.

I had an '04 Honda Civic for 4yrs the paint never chipped as bad as my FR-S did in 4 months.

Tell me about it I have already had my rear bumper repainted twice. First time a guy backed into me and it chipped the paint no real damage. Second time a bicycle ran into it and my painted chipped and started to spider. Now, yesterday I was in a corner spot and I didn't realize how much room I had when I cut the wheel all the way to the left to get out. Scraped a bit of my front lip on the side. It's not really noticeable since I used touch up paint on it. WRB is really hard to touch up. Oh, and only a week after I had it someone must of hit my door because there is a very small dent in the passenger door but you have to look at it in a certain angle to even tell it's there.

I miss all metal cars. They may kill you someday but body work is cheap and they don't crumple up like an accordion to safe your life.

Interesting. In 2008 I had a Civic SI and the paint was decent. My mitsu on the other hand would flake off if it got hit by anything. Go yo know, thanks. I have no brand loyalty when it comes to cars. If it is fun to drive and has a decent reputation, then I want to drive that car. No harm done.

Older cars tend to have a thicker coat of paint. The manufacture’s excuse is to reduce exhaust due to new regulation, but the real reason is probably just cost saving.

For example, The 2001 Rav4 my family own drove through the gravel truck filled I-5 without suffering too much from paint chip for the past 13 years.

On the other hand, the 2011 Corolla looks like some bug attacked it after just driving on the I-5 for a few months.

so basically, when it comes down to it... even though modern paint is better formulated. (stronger bonding, better UV resistance, etc) it's often thinner than older paint. So often it’s even more fragile than its older counter parts….
But hey, some people care a bit more the car’s appearance, some doesn’t, it’s just personal preference after all.
