The know it alls posting about the superiority of summer tires on bare roads are ignorant of driving on cold roads.

They think cold means freezing cold.

At minus 20C your summer tires won't stop the car at all on bare and dry pavement. In fact the pavement will actually destroy the tread it becomes so brittle.

Until temperatures reach about 7C performance winter tires will outperform summer tires everywhere. As the temperature drops the delta between summer and winter widens until the summer tires are completely useless at around minus 20C.

At minus 40 C winter tires develop more grip than all season tires do at plus 4C.

MORE grip at 36 degrees COLDER.

CORRECTION:

I hope all of the posters in this thread get thru the winter w/o any mishaps. I'd ask for proof (of any mishap) but what (anonymous) poster is going to do admit to a mishap after having expounded on what tire was best for the winter..

Tires, whether for ice, snow, dry or wet, have the best performance for their intended purpose. There will always be, in any product, any overlap of performance, perceived or actual. Also, the amount of tire wear on ANY tire will inhibit its intended performance.

Stop me when you've seen enough independent references.

Feel free to post your searches revealing that summer tires stop shorter than winter tires on dry cold pavement.

Make sure you quote a source who has actually tested on cold dry pavement and not just dry pavement.

Also, don't post lap times as evidence, you're not doing laps in winter.

Eventually any tire will warm up a bit and so will the track. This skews the "tests" some sources think they've done but haven't.

Ohmmygod, please read my post history. I NEVER said summer tires are better in the dry in cold weather - I've stated they SUCK in the dry, MULTIPLE times. I have ALSO stated that winter tires in the dry do not perform LIKE summer tires and that DIFFERENCE may get someone in trouble.
