So, winter tires are meant for dry/wet traction in non-snow, non-ice, low temp conditions? Though aren't you likely to encounter ice anyway at those temps if there's any condensation on the roads?

The stability control in my Sequoia makes it pretty much impossible to get sideways. But the underbody of my BRZ will look great in the spring.

It was a 240SX, you'd have crashed it drifting anyway.

I don't think any winter tire, *maybe* with the exception of studded ones, could save you if you hit black ice on the on/off-ramp doing 'recommended speed'. If the ice patch is small, higher dry grip of summer tires might help you stay on the road once you're off the patch
That said, switching to winter rubber when you start seeing subfreezing temps is fairly reasonable, as long as people do it with full understanding that their dry grip is gonna be compromised.

Highway on-ramps - in the dry, on snow tires, around the temperature you should be switching compounds - that's just something you all need to experience for yourself.

I think I'm going to suggest a Winter Driving sub-forum.
I've actually driven all summer on a set of nearly worn out Sottozeros. They work fine as summer tires. Better than an all season tire.

There's plenty of factual information available that proves winter tires stop shorter on cold bare pavement than summer tires can.

That's because you don't have enough winter driving experience.

My whole city is basically black ice today and has been since Saturday.

I know how to drive so my high performance winter tires work just fine.

Your experience would undoubtably correspond with your thinking, if that's what you do. It seems unlikely any real thinking is going on.

now i know you're trolling.
Take a regular on/off-ramp, posted speed and see if you're using more than .1g-.2g of lateral acceleration. If you do, studless tire's won't help you.
Typical slow on/off-ramp around here has 25mph recommended speed and a radius of about 140 feet. That's right around .2g. Not every studless winter I&S tire can produce that much on ice.

No winter tires. Just some low profile 275 width Dunlaps. Though this truck is 2wd/lowered and setup more for autocross, it has done quite well on ice..several times.

Ok if you say so it must be right. I don't have a g meter in my car other than the seat of my pants. I know I can drive in winter on winter tires basically normally until it gets very slippery then I slow down. Studies winter tires work fine on black ice. You don't need studs if you know how to drive.

Like we saw earlier - you experience is worth nada, since you were stupid enough not to buy I&S rubber. Also, "argument from authority" is a well-known trolling tool, and kinda pathetic. I'm still waiting for a link from you, remember? So instead of trolling, go try to find something.
