A couple of other threads with pages of this, including my response

If the BRZ/FR-S didn't exist, what would you have bought?

I bought my BRZ/FR-S, but I almost bought.. which has my most complete answer here.

MX-5 special edition, My wife loved it...she tolerates the BRZ; but just had too little space to live with.

Was planning on replacing my Accord (manual trans) with another Accord 2dr v6 manual, but wanted something RWD. Found it! Love my FR-S!

I had no intention of buying the FRS it wasn't even on my list actually. I was looking for a new WRX but the Subaru dealer refused to look for a base wr blue for me so I started looking for slightly used ones or a Focus ST. The Toyota dealer had a used '12 wrb premium WRX with 8k on it I test drove it but they refused to budge from 25k so I drove an FRS while I was there and fell in love with it.

I drove the new Camaro, too expensive for me. Drove the Genesis Coupe and wasn't impressed.

I was dead set on the G37, but drove it too and wasn't as impressed as I thought I would be.

I Loved my BMW 135i, but it was time to trade it in, and by then, the only 2 choices for me were used M3 or the BRZ.

Mitsubishi EVO. 5 mins in the Lotus in 90 degree weather showed its flaws.

Came from an Elise (Wife hated everything about it) - it was double the price, half the practicality and TBH no use as a daily. Drove the Renault Megane RS and it was okay but didn't win my heart

Next time round? Alfa 4C maybe but I'd have to have it for an extended test (not just a dealership test drive).

Used Cayman (they can be had around here for close to the same price).

The looks, newness, reliability and financing options swayed me. Still love the Cayman though~ one day.

I could have just kept my Corolla XRS and had it paid off or bought a Scion TC. The TC has about 20 hp more and better suspension. Having my Corolla paid off would have been the smartest choice because there was nothing wrong with it, I just put new performance tires on it, and I would have more liquidity each month without a car payment. I definitely made the most enjoyable choice. Not necessarily the most responsible choice.
