That is not true, I don't know where you heard that...the HPS is a new oil developed for cars with higher mileage outside of factory warranties. It has a much higher zinc and phosphorus content, the two main antiwear metals in oil. That is why it is not SAE approved, because it exceeds their allowances for those two metals. The reason the SAE won't approve more is because it can damage catalytic converters, thus the oil is designed for cars outside of warranty (a non SAE approved oil will void your warranty, should anything go wrong). The standard Royal Purple is the same as it was...

RP has changed their lineup.

The normal RP sold at Advance Auto and other places is the new AP SN formula that does not contain any Synerlec because it cannot be used and meet SN standards. They are in switchover right now, so you can tell the difference by the bottle style as the new SN has the new bottle design (as does the new HPS below)

They have added a new oil the High Performance Street (HPS) that still contains Synerlec and higher levels of ZDDP (around 1200 ppm). This oil has been reformulated with more Synerlec than the previous "normal" RP (I got this from the RP tech line). In addition the under 40 weight oils had the ZDDP increased to the 1200 ppm ZDDP rather than the 1000 ppm previously used to meet the SL standards. The 40 and 50 weight oils previously and still have 1200 ppm ZDDP

The XPR (extreme performance racing) line is unchanged as far as I know.

Huh...that kind of sucks! I have been using HPS, anyway, but that is kind of cheap. The Synerlac is what has saved my engine...

Most cars are specifying 0w-20 now. If the first number is 0 that's better since it means it's thinner when cold, so more oil can flow upon startup, reducing wear. I think the only way to get 0w-20 is synthetic, as non-synthetics have poor viscosity index.

Synerlec is he best additive pack in the industry, no point in buying RP without it IMHO.

I am, admittedly, a Royal Purple fanboy, but I don't disagree...The HPS still has Synerlac, so I will keep using that on my Spec, but I might have to use Amsoil (the next best oil, in my opinion) in the BRZ/FRS...Maybe I will give Redline a try, but you will never catch me with Mobil 1 in my car...

Redline uses the best base stock, but due to their low quality additives you can't use a long OCI like you can on RP.

I was looking around on bobistheoilguy.com to see how UOAs from the new Royal Purple stack up, and it just doesn't look like it is worth the extra money, but I did run across a guy who also had an 02 Spec V, and ran RP XPR 0w10 for 5k miles, with excellent results, so I might get some of that to try it out!

I'm impressed. I'm assuming you're at least in your mid-70s. If you plan on buying an FR-S or a BRZ I want a picture of you driving out of the dealership!
