The answer seems to be pretty obvious. If you compare the newer vehicles Scion has produced (especially the new Tc), they all have the same boxy/awkward look to them. The current FT-86, which has been said by the designer to have little changed going into production, looks nothing like the newly designed Scions. It just won't fit in with the current line-ups design motif. It won't be a Lexus because it is supposed to be affordable. I hate say it, but it only makes sense that it will be a celica. I would rather it stay an FT-86 or some other new name as the turbo engine purposed will put the car somewhere at or above the fastest stock supra (stock turbo supra 0-60 in 5.6sec, FT-86 w/ 230hp and miata weight should be in lower 5s). I don't want the supra name used because toyota always feels that the supra should cost out the wahzoo. They know this too, and will likely call this a celica and bring out the celica GTS the next year with the turbo, maybe awd a few years down the road based on the popularity of the car at that time.

Well said, my friend.

It's very obvious that scion has a specific aesthetic agenda. That being said, I feel it is VERY safe to say that the lineup is NOT going to have a sudden change starting with the FT-86, but rather it will evolve from type to type as the years go on. This same principle can be applied to specific models - say, the Datsun 240Z. Each generation has been specifically designed as a successor from the last, and it always carries over some design cues from the previous generation. This is also true with the Celica, Supra, and pretty much every model in Toyota's arsenal. I'm not saying that each platform is based off the previous one, but rather certain aesthetic design elements are always carried over to the newest spawn.

Now, from what we can tell, the FT-86 has been designed from the ground up as something completely new. Do you guys realize that this is a first for Toyota and also Subaru? The chassis was drawn up in Toyota's newest design facility with ABSOLUTELY no ties from any other model; the engine isn't really even coming from Toyota... The FT-86 really IS something unique, it really IS something special, it really IS something different!

Sure, the name could be Celica. Or, it may be something completely new, (which I think is more probable, considering my above argument) but we can definitely count on one thing for sure: it will NOT be a Scion.

I'll say it one more time, THE FT-86 WILL NOT BE A SCION.

When it comes out I will laugh in all of your faces; those of you who have stated it to be a Scion, that is.

I personally think that it will be Celica. I know that many young enthusiasts look at the most recent Celica and say bleh; but for many it still is known as Toyota's sporty car. And the name really does have a lot of sporting history, not just the one Corolla model that has gained a cult status long after its release.

Even if it isn't Celica... It can't be Corolla anything. People like White Comet and OldSchoolToys suggest that Celica has no street cred without noticing, that very few people outside of import enthusiasts recognize the AE86; to most 'Corolla' means a bland, small, cheap sedan. Again, *yawn*

If its not Celica, I wouldn't mind at all a numbers - and - letters code akin to MR-2; but it can't be FT. That's what many recent Toyota concepts are called, not just our '86.

Scion also offers many performance upgrades. Before Scion's existence, a similar program was ran by Toyota which included the last gen Celica and MR2. Due to low sales, they were cut. This is primarily because the market wasn't right for sport coupes, and everyone was in search of higher MPG. Scion began to show appeal and has potential to bring back sport coupes into Toyota's lineup without altering their affordable luxury lineup. And now that the market is ready for affordable sport coupes, it's only right that they go with Scion. That way the Scion name can begin to attribute some respect around auto enthusiasts and lose it's all show, no go nameplate. Besides, can't blame Scion for shaping into the what the market needed at the time.

Although I do agree with all the scion bashing, and they definetly need a new design director.
Let's start to dissect this. You would think that with the debut of the tC that all the scion ft-86 rumors would end.

Toyota needs this car more than Scion does. They are not getting the crossover that they need. After a tC, what is there to go to in the Toyota camp? 0 Coupes, 0 anything sporty until you get to the Lexus lineup. The FT is the missing link. This car has been designed to rejuvinate Toyota's lineup and image.

The Celica and the MR-S failed because;

a) Not enough hp/$. The Celica needed a GT-4 version and the MR-S needed a 2ZZ version. Both would probably have never been cancelled.

b) In the case of the MR-S, not enough practicality...

c) Polarizing design. Love it or hate it.

Not Lexus, Not Scion, but Toyota.
Sounds about right, except the Toyota part.

If people think this car fits in better with Toyota's lineup rather than Scion, I dont know what to think. Toyota has not one enthusiast oriented car, nor a single car that really projects itself solely to the youth, now why would they want to add a misfit sports car in their line up? It would be like porsche introducing a mini-van. Scion on the other hand IS a youth oriented name and the 86 would fit in very well with the crowd they are trying to target with this car.

Think about they average people that walk into a Toyota dealership vs a Scion dealership... it seems that the people more likely to by a car along the lines of the 86 would be at Scion.

And why is it that people are so intent on guess from a past bucket of names for this car? I think it is going to be something completely new.

Usually I see women driving the former, and teens the latter.
