Yeah, having owned three cars now with paddle shifters (all of which were mounted on the wheel) I would much prefer they were on the column. But you get used to it.

its kinda like a slush box
it has a locking torque converter
2-6 its fully locked like a DCT so no parasitic loss and throttle inputs arent sluggish
1st gear its unlocked with a low stall rate so its not as slushy as your common corolla plus traffic stops arent as bad as a DCT...

also its based off the F series Lexus transmissions, so quicker shift times in the auto that many many of its competitors

the LFA doesnt even use a DCT, dont worry about the auto, like everything about this car, instead of ridiculing it, just take one for a test drive, if you like it you like it...

As a paddle shifting n00b, can you please explain? I just got my first Logitech G27 wheel for my PC gaming, and the paddles move with the wheel on that... What is better about them not moving?

I think it depends on the quickness of the steering ratio - if you don't have to cross over your arms while driving then wheel-mounted makes more sense. F1 cars with their quick ratios have wheel-mounted paddles.

It's largely personal preference though from what I've read. I'm used to the G27 layout too, and would prefer it on a real car. Having to move your hand away from the wheel position it's naturally in when you want to downshift in the middle of a turn is an unneeded complication.

Gear changes on the AT look to be very crisp and fast (and can probably be tuned to be faster).

Yeah, bummer than the paddles are mounted to the wheel... would be better if fixed.

Lol every time I read this thread title I see "Anyone else a loser like me".

I know damn well the advantages of modern automatics but the point of this car is direct driver feel and control. You cannot do that in an auto. I your left foot ain't in it, ya doing it wrong son.

Video game wheels don't give you an realistic feel for this because in the game you rarely turn the wheel more then about 90 degrees.

Most of the time it's no big deal, but at times when doing a sharp turn while shifting, then up and down become flip-flopped and you have to compensate. If you use the paddle shifters all the time it's no big deal develope the habit. If however you like most people who only use the paddle shifters occasionally then you're likely to shift up when you ment to shift down or vise versa.

My personal preference would be to have the paddles on the column.

I just came to say this:

Automatics have come a long way, and are actually pretty good these days. The one supposedly going into this car is supposed to be really good, so to those that want it, enjoy it.

Now, and this is true for F1, true for DTM, true for rally drivers, and true for your grocery getter, a manual transmission, one with the proper clutch pedal, will always, ALWAYS, be more involving than one missing the clutch pedal. I mean, it's by definition, it's called a manual because you're the one manually changing the gears at whatever RPM you feel like changing. If you look at Senna driving the MP4/4 McLaren, you can clearly see him shifting the turbocharged monster himself using a good ol 6 speed gearbox. He was more involved, but maybe because of that, he lost tenths of seconds to the shifting, something important to F1 races. Because of that, sequential gearboxes are better for racing, but, they are definitely less involving, making for, in my opinion, a less fun driving experience.

They are? I thought manuals had less problems because they weren't as complex. Mind clarifying?

I think I know what he means. A lot of manual cars nowadays have problems and I always see on forums these guys are complaining about gear grinds and other stuff. Most RSX was unreliable in 5 spd/6spd manual versions while my 5spd auto is very reliable for 5+ years now. On my old site CRSX every manual guy complains but lives with it regardless. So I think that guy is thinking the same thing will happen on the FRS/BRZ.

well a lot of people who drive manuals don't even know how to drive them correctly and do more damage to the trans.

thats why you see a lot of problems related to manuals trans and not autos.
