To be fair, in the '60s, a 7 liter V8 would hit 400+hp all day long (and quite a bit more than that with a good blower), so your comparison there is a bit misleading, as far as technological progress is concerned.

Since this actually prompts discussion unlike the other post...

I believe when referring to an 'adiabatic' engine the idea is to allow the engine to run hot, as such less energy is allowed to be turned into waste heat and it creates better useful power. This is not a new concept, it's part of the reason Ferdinand Porsche designed the Beetle and his own sports cars to be rear engined, to reduce the cooling effects and squeeze more power (and thus more efficiency) out of his boxers. The limit to doing this is in the materials, obviously you can only get so hot until metal starts warping which was a problem with his VW's and 911's in the 60's since they were air cooled sitting in traffic on a hot summer day left several German cars stranded on the side of the road.

As for the power output per displacement, nothing tops BMW:

This is cool, but not extraordinary.

Edit: for those unwilling to skim the BMW article: 1.5L Turbo inline 4 with a peak output estimated at 1400 hp in 1986, lower output and better longevity with a reduction in boost.

For sure. Go back and look at the Chevy motor in the Chapparel race car in the 60s.

You are comparing smog choked street engines to full out race engines. The kind of HP they are talking about is impressive but certainly not unheard of in a race motor. Look at the Toyota turbocharged four cylinder from IMSA in the Gurney Eagle. That 2.1L made 750HP in endurance form with a air restrictor. It was reputed to be able to make over 1000HP in sprint configuration. That was in 1992.

The man behind the project, Al Solaroli, has been trying to con people into this "Adiabatic process" for engines for years.

They claim to have developed a 2.5 liter five-cylinder naturally aspirated Audi engine that can develop 800hp and 1000Nm of torque, with peak horsepower at 2500rpms. Good luck finding any proof of that engine actually running that power though, this video shows a lot of cellos, people tearing down and rebuilding an engine, "censored ports", and a ridiculous dyno sheet, but no real proof of anything.

For a read on Solaroli's previous endeavour in sports car racing, in which he conned Porsche out of one RS Spyder before Porsche had to take him to court to try and get it back since he never paid up despite a "$50 million investment without sponsors", see here.

In other words, this FA20 probably does not work, and will never see an LMP car.
