Just not sure which torque spec i should go with. Fumoto said 18 ft-lb, owner manual says 29 ft-lb for the OEM drain plug.
If I had to pick, I'd go with 29. Better tight than loose. Like I said, the pan and the valve are pretty strong.

Also, a socket won't go over it - it's not hex shaped, it's a big ol' cube on the main valve body. That hex that you see on the nipple version is how the nipple is attached to the valve. That is not what you want to be tightening. You'll end up crushing the ball joint inside the valve if you tighten that any more than it's spec'd out to already.

So how do i tell when i reach 29 ft-lb of torque? How does everyone torque the valve?

Crescent style torque wrench or crowfoot wrench on the end of your socket torque.

Or do what most people do and just tighten it without torque precision. The oil pan and valve are pretty strong, you won't hurt anything by tightening it by hand.

It's a different material, and wasn't designed by Toyota. Applying correct torque to a fastener not only applies compression force to the materials it's binding, but also causes the threads to stretch a bit under load. The Fumoto valve may be a softer material which requires less torque. That lower torque value could also be due to the softer gasket provided with the valve, or the valve threads itself. Just a thought.

Kind of an old thread but I purchased on of these valves and now need to get a set of crowfoot wrenches for my socket torque wrench.

Does this require a 19mm crowfoot?

Thanks guys.

Just some food for thought, I installed this valve on an 06 pilot not too long ago. OEM spec says 30ft/lb while fumoto says 18. I went for oem spec and ended up breaking the valve thread. Luckily I was able to get the broken thread out of the oil pan and bought a replacement. Torqued at about 18ft/lbs and so far no leaks. I plan on adding this valve on my swp brz after in use up my complimentary dealer oil changes lol. Also I used new crush washers instead of those blue washer things.

I don't remember it being that big. When I installed it on the pilot, I had to get those extension plugs since the oil pan is recessed. I torqued the extension to 18 then hand tightened the valve onto it and then some. So far, no leaks. Ill double check when I get home but I believe it's more in the 16/17mm range.

Oops. You realize the valve is not an OEM bolt. Different design and materials as I'm sure you came to realize.

I've used the fumoto valves for 4 years with no clip and no accidental openings. I love these things.

I torqued mine to "hand snug" with an adjustable wrench

And after a couple oil changes, the nipple is useless. The valve is a diameter such that the oil won't flow at an exaggerated rate as if you removed the oil cap and drain plug on a stock car.

This is one of my favorite "mods"

Use supplied gasket don't use OEM crush washer. The Garlock style gasket that the Fumoto valve comes with is superior anyhow.

Good advice ^. Always use the recommendations from the manufacturer of the part that you are trying to install.

Just installed mine today. TQ the valve on at 20 ft/lbs. So far so good. This little thing is going to make oil changes a breeze! This is my first time using one too.
