Then I guess you do have the tables corrected.

But this is exactly why I prefer open tuning solution - I can check and compare the tables myself. Eg vishnu's tunes before v1.33 do have Transient Ignition Retard table adjusted but the Transient Ignition Retard RPM Threshold was left unchanged whereas (if i'm not mistaken) as part of the fix supposedly it was bumped to 10000 in A01C.

I'm running an OpenFlash OTS tune and can confirm without a doubt that the TIR tables have the fix that supposedly solves this problem. I never experienced the popping noises or anything weird with the car until this weekend. After four hard AutoX runs I drove the car for a few mins to cool down, then I parked it with the hood open and shut it off. Approximately 90 minutes later I went to start the car for my next set of runs and the car was turning over but wouldn't start. I gave it another shot, no go. Third time's a charm, the car fired up but it popped a few times...I shut it off, then restarted it and it was running fine after that. I went and ran 3 more hard AutoX runs and the car ran perfectly fine. It drove fine for the drive home and so far it's good today too.

Should I be concerned? Can I check my DI seals?

You can, of course, but after you learn what you'll need to purchase and see what an elaborate chore it is, you may decide not to.

Look up "Dezoris," find and watch his excellent video on installing new DI seals, and consider whether you really want to do that yourself.

It is VERY important for safety reasons to replace all of the one-time-use seals in the fuel system connections. You don't want your car turned into a burned out hulk.

I guess a more important question would be, is what I experienced DI seal failure? Or was it a fluke? Because if it was DI seals, how come the problem went away and I got 1st place in my class? Plus the car's been awesome since? (80+ miles of driving so far)

It does not sound like it, but what do I know?

I haven't experienced any of this at all. If you've read everything on these forums, you know as much as I do.

If you truly had seal failure, the noise should be repeatable. I was able to make mine "pop", simply by applying a lot of throttle. I could suppress the popping, by accelerating slowly and applying ~<25% throttle. However, once I jumped on the throttle...the popping was very noticeable.

From within the car (while driving), it sounds like your tires are kicking up a lot of rocks. If you pop the hood and listen, it'll make a very loud pop/firecracker noise. Feel free to PM me, if you'd like me to email you an audio/video sample of what mine sounded like.

awesome. (well not awesome for you), but awesome because I doubt that was my issue then. I've done a crapton of WOT since this incident without any other pops.

I just thought it was weird when it happened since it had never done that before. After watching the videos on DI seal inspection, I sure as hell don't want to go check mine either. Way too much work. I'll just keep driving and hope that IF it does happen, it happens during the powertrain warranty. I'm at 25k miles already so time will fly...

Perhaps the cylinders were flooded a bit after shutting the car down after the runs, the pop may have been afterfire from the excess fuel igniting in the exhaust.

I will be going into evasive motorsports sometime in december to to the upgrade to the fuel injectors, fuel pump, vortech pulley, and belt along with my DI seals. It will be on the dyno afterwards so let's see if anything happens and how things hold up for DD and some spirited driving through the canyons. The car will not be on the track anymore after this incident.

[QUOTE=Young_makaveli;1328651]Hi guys just wanted to know if the noise is like this?

I couldn't hear anything. Give it gas to the floor and rev it. See if you hear like a pop or a knock. The noise should also be present when blipping the throttle to shift down or when the engine is under load. Also you will hear it when you start the car. It'll pop a couple times

I'm highly disappointed in the FR-S right now because of this DI seal issue. Since I've learned about the issue I've been giving all my track time to my S2000 (a car as reliable as the sun) and refuse to track my FR-S (a car I hoped rival the s2000 in reliability). Essentially, this makes the FR-S a daily driver only ... the equivalent of the worlds most impractical Yaris with worse MPGs and more expensive at that.

If Toyota or the aftermarket doesn't come up with a viable solution soon I'm going to look to unload this car. I will not tolerate wondering if the next expensive track day is the one I'll have to cut short and perform tedious maintenance tasks.

Well said. I have a cheap civic to DD. I don't need an expensive toy that I can't even use on the track.
