she's kind of inviting criticism. A race car doesn't have to be tawdry; everyone's just treating her differently because she's a cute girl.

She "responded" to the criticism. That's different from what you are implying here. I'd rather see her respond in like-kind, than to roll over and say "Thank you, I'll change myself to fit what your idea of ME should be".
