After seeing the RC spec wheels didn't fit this kit, I spent today hunting for an alternative. Figured there would be a few Subaru options, but I like the fact my car is a Toyota, so looked here first. Didn't have to look long..

2001 - 2005 Toyota Celica 16"x6.5" +39 offset. Simple 5 spoke design. 15lbs. Found some at a local wreckers, 4 wheels and 205/50/16 tyres for $180. (For all four!)
Went and checked before commiting. Maths seemed right, as the RC wheel is the same size but +48.
Put template in wheel, a good 4-5mm clearance from caliper to spoke. About 13mm clearance at the top.
Clearances are from template too, which already had some clearance built into it.

Will put pics up later.

What's the point of a smaller wheel if it weighs the same as my 17x9 TC105?

This looks interesting, although I don't really need a brake upgrade.

They were extremely cheap, $180 for 4, with tyre.

I don't have to care about them getting scratched, because cheap to replace.

They will have a smaller circumference, so acceleration will be improved.

They're an OEM wheel, so extremely strong.

Nothing stopping me getting you model wheel in 16x7, which will weigh much less than a 17x9. Off the top of my head, ssr type c 16x7 weighs 12lbs; I know because there's a set for sale in another city here, I'm just waiting for the seller to get me a shipping cost.

Also, even if a set of smaller wheels weighs the same as a larger set, the rim of the smaller wheels is closer to the center of the wheel, so it takes less energy to spin it.

Small Update
I installed the new rotors and the Carbotech XP-10 pads. I bled the brakes properly and took it for a spin. The XP-10s seem like the perfect pad for my street use. They don't bite as hard as the Wilwood BP-30s but are quiet and once they bite down, they have a good amount of torque and stop the car pretty quickly. Very happy with them so far. I didn't have an extensive drive, just enough to bed the brakes in and a short cruise.

Is this the kit that would be recommended for the rear, to suit the front? I realise that up until now we've just been talking about the front replacement kit only, but I'm looking to replace the rears as well because I have the lower spec 86, which came with solid rear discs; but also, I'm all about that reducing unsprung weight.

Cheers.

How would you determine if this would be compatible with our parking brake? Or are parking brake systems pretty much universal?

That's the part I'm stuck in too aye. Although now I'm sitting here questioning whether I could live without the handbrake - I think I could because it would save a shit ton of weight.

And, I'm thinking about this kit...

It has disclaimers about heat sink etc, but I imagine that's more aimed towards sti guys; we're a fair bit lighter than they are.

I don't ever leave cars in gear when I turn them off, it's always neutral with the handbrake pulled. Habits can be changed though.

Especially because it's rotational weight on the driveline, so dat response.

@diss7, are you going to be buying front and rear brakes soon?

Doesn't robispec run a similar setup from the brakeman in the rear? Nice find btw. I think I'm going this way for the rear and I'm still a little torn about the front. Probably end up with the wilwood lightweight set too.
