Until somebody actually does this swap and posts pros/cons everybody is going to say trade it in. Inevitably swaps will start to happen and there will be options. Boils down to how long do you want (or not want) to wait and how long do you plan to own this car?

What they said... Swaps are only cost effective for guys that have the time and money to race. Even then they'd probably just have bought the manny tranny to beganny.

I've changed the following cars from auto to manual.

1968 Camaro SS 327 TH350 to M-22 4spd.
1981 Mustang 351C (swapped) from C4 to T-5.

My advice...

DON'T DO IT! Too expensive, too much work, too much hassle and never seem to work as well as a car that came equipped with one stock. (They just don't "feel right".

Regards,
Scott

Sorry to be a buzz-kill to your potential transmission swap but it is totally not worth it. Honestly though, I don't see how AT is that bad. I drive my girlfriend's Lexus is250 which is an AT and it is super fun. It by no means handles like an 86 but I can imagine the 86 would be fun as an AT too. Either way between AT or MT you're still changing gears, you can still rev the piss out of the engine and drive away happily.

If you still can't settle with the AT, sell the car and buy a MT.

at the point people start doing engine swaps for this car, you are already changing the ecu the trans as well for many of the combos. I wouldn't assume anything at this point. Give a year or two more when lots of these cars start to get very heavily modified.
