For a low-slung sporty car, a sunroof is not a good idea for reasons already mentioned, and I'm *very* glad to hear this car won't have it (was worried that the highest-spec version might *require* a sunroof).
Targa is even dumber. Perfect way to lose chassis rigidity while adding weight (necessary to beef up the lower chassis to make up for the loss of stiffness from the roof). The C4 Corvette engineers were totally bummed when late in the program they were hit with the targa requirement. Then Toyota stupidly copied them with the Supra! Fixed roof with no holes, please. Stiffer, lighter-weight, cheaper. I recently was looking for a V8 FD RX-7, and *no* sunroof was up there in my list of desires/requirements. The clean-roof base models are actually more desirable than the sunroof models. (I wound up with a '94 base w/ 500hp LS2, wheee!). |

Well since the brochures show a "cage" the stiffer chassis could be possible there so then a targa could be fine

Take a shoebox, try to twist it with the lid in place. Now without the lid in place. Orders of magnitide difference in stiffness. If you wanted to make up all of that stiffness by adding structure in the bottom of the box, you'd have to add MUCH more weight to even get in the same ballpark. If the floor/tunnel structure in the FT86 were stiff enough to make up for the loss of the roof (targa), the car would be heavier. A closed top is just inherently much more structurally efficient than an open box. |

The <20lb. sunroof is what made it bearable for me to delete the nearly 70 lbs. of A/C equipment and the corresponding drag on on the motor from my Celica. I also don't fit in a non-sunroof Celica with my helmet on. I'll have to wait and see on what the airflow is like in this car with just windows open. Maybe someone will offer a rally style roof scoop aftermarket at some point.

I'd LOVE a sunroof. My old car, a 98 eclipse had it and I love it! My Z, my car for the last 6 years doesn't have it. Kinda want my next car to have one, but obviously if I get the BRZ, then it'll be another 5 years of no sunroof driving!

What about a Targa top like the Supra's had, they don't weigh much at all if anything more then a hard top, they make the car less rigid but not enough to stop people from getting them. Plus if you didn't want it, just get the HardTop version. Some people like having the sun on them. I know I love my targa off on a nice day
Oops, just saw that targa was already posted Quote:
I think it's hilarious how 90% of everything on this forum reverts back to "will it be race worthy, aero dynamically sound, weight sparring, ect...) some people won't care what times they could put down at a track with a hard top over a targa. Other will, but that's why they give(should give) mult choices

Cruz control
One thing I use all the time is cruz control and I see nothing on the steering wheel or on the lists of features that shows it. I will be bumed if it is not available. Dan

Yeah, come to think of it I'd really like that too, my "local" track is 4 highway hours away.

I love a sunroof but this car doesn't need it. This car is kinda already heavy for its size.
