We don't tune with OpenFlash. Assuming OpenFlash has access to all the data needed to properly tune and data log an FRS/BRZ, then it comes down to the tuner as to what gains can be made.

On any tuning solution, an off-the-shelf tune must be conservative to work for the masses regardless of specific modifications. A custom tune should and does make more gains than an off-the-shelf tune because the tuner can tune for that specific car and its specific modifications.

For tuning a turbocharger setup, the EcuTek solution has unique capabilities that allow an EcuTek tuner produce a superior tune. This includes properly controlling boost electronically, implementing proper electronic over-boost protection, per gear boost control, etc. EcuTek also has the ability to implement a Speed Density solution for forced induction setups where the MAF sensor is exceeded, relocated, or removed completely, allowing for any custom intake system, or no intake at all (filter right on turbo inlet).

The tuner has the tools in EcuTek to implement a full boost control system similar to the factory boost control on the Subaru STi, WRX, Legacy GT, Forester XT, etc. In fact, the tuner can build a boost control system that is superior to Subaru's factory boost control system.

EcuTek also allows for the implementation of a flex-fuel capability allowing the tune to adjust on-the-fly, in real-time based on ethanol content. Handles any mixture of regular gas and E85 so you don't have to worry about running your tank empty and switching maps.

EcuTek is the only tuning solution I know of currently, that can implement a flex-fuel solution. And EcuTek has had a flex-fuel solution for quite a while now.

Sorry to be long-winded, but I felt you should know more than just comparing power gains in different tuning solutions. Some people will tell you, "all tuning solutions are the same, it's all about the tuner."

Well, it is mostly about the tuner, but I am hopefully showing you that not all tuning solutions are created equal.

Bob...

you gotta speak about the new kit rental program ECUtek now offers to tuners on a budget! This is huge for us FRS/BRZ consumers who cant afford the standard tune with license, tune and kit.

Maybe you posted a link somewhere else I have not seen but it needs to be here!! in the tuner section. ~$600 beans and the community can now get a custom ECUtek tune specific to our cars mods needs.. that's huge.

That's right up there with the OpenFlash in terms of price

Josh

Haha, Thanks Josh!

It's actually not an "EcuTek" rental program, it's our own "Circuit Motorsports" rental program

We wanted to make sure that our customers who wanted a custom E-tune, but didn't want/need to have a cable permanently, could do so without incurring the extra fee of buying the Cable Programming kit.

We will rent you an EcuTek Programming Kit w/Cable so you can flash our tune to your car, data log and dial in your tune, and then once you are finished send it back!

So yes, through us, you can now get a custom E-tune for a lot less than was necessary before

You can find the details of this program in our sale thread in the vendor classified section.

You mention this rental program. Is the $600 an annual rental fee? $600 for what?

LOL - there is no annual fee, that would be crazy! The rental fee is a one time fee for you to use the cable to get the car tuned, and data-logged until the tune is dialed in.

You then return the cable for a refund. See our sale thread in the vendor classified section for details.

So, I have an unresonated catback from Milltek. I can expect similar gains? What if I go for their secondary cat delete, can I expect even more gains?

Also, your torque seems to drop off earlier than I've seen others do. Quirk of the dyno, tune, engine or other explanation?

The dyno graph above was performed on a BRZ with stock exhaust with muffler delete and drop in filter. The only performance gain from the muffler delete comes from weight savings since all the restrictions in the exhaust are up front in the system.

So, if you are just going catback, then yes similar gains, maybe a little better. If you delete the secondary cat with a catless frontpipe then the gains will be more since you are removing a significant exhaust restriction.

It looks like the torque drop you mention happens within 100-200rpm of a stock setup. That is a negligible amount of RPM difference most likely in the tune and other variables. Even though it drops at that point, there it is still a decent torque gain over stock (at that point and through the entire rpm range), especially since the gains are tune only with stock exhaust. The total resolution of the dyno graph also shows the drop off beign a bit more dramtic than usual, as you can see the bunching up of the lines there at the right side.

A tune alone can dramatically reduce the torque dip as seen above with cam angle tuning via VVT, but certain headers + a tune can eliminate the dip. When driving the BRZ above, the torque dip can barely be felt between 3800 and 4000rpms.

Basically it's a way to differentiate between a mostly stock car (intake, drop-in filter, minor upgrades) and a Car with more extensive mods (headers, exhaust, etc.).

It's a quick way for us to know what the customer has on the car, a starting point.

We custom tune all of our maps to suit the customers car, so no two maps will ever be the same once finished. If you get a tune from us you are not getting an off-the-shelf "one-size-fits-all" map, it is a truly customized tune

Just started the process! Exciting to see if you guys can reduce the torquedip on my car. That and a raised idle is really all I'm asking. :-)

So far I like that I'm learning about the tune from Bob.. what the tune will try to accomplish, and some of the details if I ask.. it's a dialog.

This page also helped that I found: http://www.autospeed.com/cms/A_1595/article.html It covers air/fuel ratios - lean, rich, etc.
