They're just de-obscuring what is already in place on hundreds of millions of vehicles. My mind remains unblown.

The best use for this, IMO, would be to log steering angle, brake pressure, throttle position, accleration (xyz) and GPS position (from the smartphone that you're logging with). Then use it to improve your lap times or compare braking points with your friends etc.

I've heard of the GT5 showing a reply of the car's performance on the track in real life. My thoughts are, this is cool and helpful in every way. However, i guess that's only if you do race on one of the tracks available on the game. I doubt it'll map out your local race track.

Anyways here's the video I've seen on the 86 being implemented on GT5 @ Fuji Raceway. You guys probably seen this before, I'll add it here for those who haven't yet seen this;

That's actually not really difficult.

What are the implications of this in regards to bolt on mods with a tune? Say for the car enthusiast who only has so much money and cant go crazy with internal mods.

It would just make life a lot easier to have all that spit out on it's own. Not mind blowing (the GT5 thing is pretty cool though) but very convenient for me IF it allows access to everything. Hopefully it can pull GPS from the NAV system and the NAV system has a high enough refresh rate. Also would be great if it allowed the user to add their own sensors to the system, which will at least be possible with some post-processing, but I mean an easy plug and play solution for tire temp and shock pots. Probably wishful thinking.

Sounds like they want to sell like a Software Development Kit/license thing to let people either play with it themselves or make stuff like Cobb's AP.

so... Bluetooth interface huh? This will be interesting... maybe this car will feature the first bluetooth/remotely-hackable CAN bus interface.

Bluetooth is fairly insecure, and historically car hacks only work when you connect directly to the bus. With a Bluetooth however, that physical connection is unnecessary. You can hack from a distance. I wonder what the interface allows a remotely connected unit to do...

from another perspective though, maybe you can pair your iPhone to your 86 and use it as a remote control??

Does that mean I can remote control my 86 from parking lot entrance and drive it directly to the entrance so that I don't have to go all the way up, just like that in the 007 movie?

Wishful thinking, though.

I wouldn't hold my breath for anything better than 1Hz on the GPS (ie. don't bother). Position and speed will need to come from an accelerometer based maths channel IMO.

As for user defined sensors, it's not that hard to solder up a board with a microcontroller and a CAN transceiver. The issue, IMO, will be getting the ECU to pass along the new information and not just the predefined ~30 channels.

So how does this differ from ISO 15765 / OBD-II / etc? Other then the obvious fact its not a diagnostic protocol. Very interested to get more information on the specifics of the protocol actually! Hopefully it will also have much faster sampling rates for the sensors / logging (Can only do about 10Hz on OBD for internal ECU params (OEM specific) - which gets much slower as you add more variables too).

I do like the idea of the car coming with all sorts of 'tuning' sensors and information though!

I wonder it is going to require a CAN Kvaser cable. They aren't exactly cheap. I'd assume they if they wanted this to catch on, they would need to build it into the ECU and simply have a USB out. Very cool regardless. I remember how happy we all were when the ROM was cracked and shared for speed density tuning on the 16bit Subaru ECUs.

The comment on Bluetooth has me wondering if that is how they want us to connect? I'm really thinking this will largely be a monitoring and not a tuning feature. Flashing via Bluetooth would make me kind of nervous.

looks like the Torque app for android... but with more features... still nice that a manufacturer thinks about that.
