Nikkei Japan articles releases details about the TOYOTA 86 "CAN-BUS

Bluetooth/USB systems being developed for user interfacing of data in 30+ parameters, including engine ECU data, Geo location data, yaw and g-force sensors, and chassis sensors. It will be open sourced for licensed and registered software developers and make it's way to smartphone applications for social interconnections, as well as more specific uses such as tuner development, black-box loggers, and even gaming devices interfacing such as GT5 for replay and simulations.

This is basically something I wanted to leak long ago, but have been keeping my mouth shut from our meetings with the Chief, and now I'd like to say that it has been in development for quite a while now, and that it will be a reality, and a reasonably ready state for consumer use.

At least for unregulated states and countries, and on raceways, we might see a future in more readily customizable ECU's as well as development with much greater information parameters from our cars, not just in the FT86 siblings but for many of the future sports cars? I would love to believe so...

What do you think about lifestyle in which we share ECU parameters on the web? and racing our virtual data of actual driving and putting them against each other on GT5? or even testing new engine and chassis parameters on such devices?? World is limitless when it comes to digital integration of cars to modern networked computing.

Perhaps this is one of the very necessary ingredient and by-product of future autonomous cars, but it's exciting to think that such technology will also make possible, more ways to enjoy sports cars and automobile customization in a whole new way as well.

Lastly, President of Toyota, Akio Toyoda, also thinks so as well, and takes part, first hand, in development of devices like this, as well as classic art of tuning the cars the old fashioned way, by taking it for a blast on race tracks all over the world.

Sounds revolutionary. :w00t:

i would love to see digital info when changing from stock suspension to coilovers, aftermarket can just post their digital results from testing to sell their products... :D

Hell ya, I didn't even think of that.

Each manufacturer could post stock and then modified suspension track times from Tsukuba!! haha, neat idea honestly.

It would make for some interesting comparisons.

Here are some of the parameters translated from the article:

I wonder what all the 30+ parameters are...

Is this coming for the new GT86 that would be great, or is it for futur cars?

My thoughts exactly! Iv been waiting for this thing to come out for a long time. I first heard rumors of this in '06 when some ECU tuners were talking about sharing data other than fuel and timing maps. A private discussion was made and it was thought that the GT-R was going to implement something similar with all the sensory data it acquires. But that same year, it was more exciting to see it featured when the FT86 concept in 2009 was unveiled, and its details have been sketchy until recently.

Its like the facebook for cars! Taking bench racing to the next level.

ECU tuning and understanding has been a widely overlooked component in virtually over 80% of average enthusiasts. Developing an ECU thats user friendly and promotes average users to explore and share their data across the web is BIG especially in the realm of smart phone access.

This is not like saving maps and sharing them on a forum! this is so much more.

The big thing is......who will be the first to develop the virtual venue and software to support this big community of sharing. There is plenty of money to be made if you think about it in a "facebook" sense.

is this going to be in ALL toyotas from now on? sounds too good to be true coming from the same guys who lock all their ecus...

i was half way through the article when I realized that I was rereading the same info twice.

Great news! This will be a very cool feature to have. I cant wait to see where this takes the industry as a whole.

So we will be able to have GT-R-esque monitoring Devices? Through USB perhaps?

That's what I'd like to see, on the in dash unit; just like the GT-R.

More accurate gauges for temps and pressure.
