Knock on e85 not a problem?

So pretty much title says it all. My tuner said that knock on e85 is nothing to worry about. I am a bit skeptical. My latest tune from him is getting occasional knock correction of -2 to -4.

Should I be concerned? Or is e85 really that much safer?

With the extreme knock resistance of E85, I'd be concerned. I'd find a new tuner who understands that you can tune right past MBT without knock on E85 in most cars, so knock is certainly a problem.

Be concerned, knock is knock no matter the gas. Be even more worried when E85 is so resistant to knock and you are still knocking.


Even more, DISCARD that tuner after trying to sell you that Bullshit.

E85 can knock like any other fuel. It can also destroy your engine the same way. I would be nervous. Is this an online tuner or an in-person tuner?

I miss read this early...I thought you had 91 or 93 and knock and he was telling you to go to E85..If you are on E85 and knocking run away from that tuner fast...KNOCK IS KNOCK and KNOCK is BAD! or have him fix that shit

This is a "local 90min drive" tuner. I really wanted to do a dyno tune and be able to see results and adjust/tweak on the dyno etc...Always thought that was the best. I thought that having a local tuner the resluts would be same day, and get it ready quick, didint like the idea of sending logs, waiting weeks for updates and then having an issue just to send logs and wait weeks again. Seemed like it could take months to get tuned this way. At this rate with my tuner its pretty much same thing as he is always 3-4 weeks out to schedule time. And since he is like 90minutes away, not like its easy to just swing by. That is a 3hr time commitment on my part.

This experience is making me think that i should just politely ask for my money back and that i should give remote tuning a try...

On a related note....the knock is not all the time, maybe once out of every 3-5 drives. I have been logging every second i drive in my car right now.

Is that less of a concern, or is any knock bad? Just trying to understand the severity of the situation. I am guessing that constant knock under WOT is no good, but every once in a while?

Please excuse the ignorance, as i am new to the tuning and FI /e-85 thing.

I sense you are trying to be reasonable and I applaud you. Having said that, since there are people that are able to get remote tunes that either never knock, or if anything its a rare -1, I'd say its still unacceptable.

Wanted to add, that the difference between constant knock and rare knock is the same as a slow painful death or a faster one, but both result in the same.

I am, He is a small business owner and I am as well. I have multiple clients all the time, and always do my best to help and address concerns promptly. I tend to over communicate status, problems etc...I do not take on more than i can handle and will not leave a job unfinished. If it takes me 100hrs a week nonstop, i work extra to take care of clients and the work I promise.

So i am trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, but i am just getting to the point that i think it might be best to stop working with him and try remote tuning.

My thought is, he took money for a tune ($850), a bit over 3 months ago. And has yet to finalize it. At this point i should be justified in demanding a resolution via a new complete tune, or a refund, or at least a partial refund. Just frustrated that its been close to 3 months and i have yet to get on a track, as i have not yet got a complete safe tune. And of course, now winter is coming and i will be driving my car even less.

Is the sporadic knock correction always when you first enter WOT or when you first apply load on the engine? It could be tip in knock. I see knock every once in a while on 91 and it is always just tip in knock.

I wish. I do get that occasionally on entering/exiting WOT, but those are usually around -1 at the most. I have a few logs showing -2/-3 at wot from 3500-4900k

This is where it tends to happen most of the time, around 3800-4300 or so.

Knock is things hitting against other things at thousands of revolutions per minute. Hundreds of miles per hour of aluminum hitting aluminum.

I'd venture out to say its bad either way. Your choice, I'll be selling my block soon so if you need another, lemme know.
