Kind of something that bummed me out was the all analog dials for the climate controls on the FR-S.

Mine have a slight wiggle to them which makes them feel cheap. Not unlike most of the other plastics on the interior.

Mine blows warm air with A/C off even with dial down to coldest setting.

Very annoying, should be pulling fresh cool air from outside not recycled heated air in the engine compartment.

Well, that just seems to be the nature of the beast ..... Miatas do the same thing.

Back in the day, we had a little lever under the dash that, when pushed down, would open a vent just below the windshield, which allowed lots of fresh air in the cabin.

Maybe that concept will get re-invented ....

If you want to stop the warm air, press the recirculate button...

For me its not really stopping the warm air but rather wanting cool fresh air without the A/C.

It would be nice for those days where its in the 60's and you want to just let fresh air in the vents come in so you dont kick the A/C on. The cool fresh air would be just enough to keep the cabin comfortable.
I know you can do the same by rolling down the windows but sometimes I dont want the noise from the wind.

Yeah, it turns the AC on.
I've had a few cars that do this as well without turning the light on.

Right right, almost.

You can however push the middle button inside the fan speed dial.
It will change the locations, (ie Windshield, vent, floor.)
Give it a go.

The irony of your reply amuses me...

Your suggestion negates the purpose of wanting FRESH air

Well that's kinda lame.

So in winter when I'm trying to defrost my windshield with the temp all the way warm, it's going to turn on the a/c and I can't turn it off. eak

Yeah, it's lame for defrost but helps a lot with defogging.
I noticed if you set it on the between setting (right before foot and window) it doesn't turn the ac on though.

Yeah, but the air mix door will still be full hot. The a/c runs for dehumidifying on defrost. If you're in a humid environment and try to run straight heat with no a/c you won't be able to see anything.

I seem to have solved the problem on our car. I made an heat shield strip from aluminium foil to cover the length of the black plastic duct in the engine compartment to deflect radiant heat from the engine. See pic attached. I only expected it to work partially but it works really well. Heat soak from the engine and sun means it can take a while for outside-temperature air to start coming through but it does eventually which to me proves that duct is a major source of the problem. While I was at it I allowed some of the foil to extend down to shield some plastic connecters and some of the firewall. Previously I sealed off an opening near the bonnet hinge that allowed a little engine compartment air into the duct but that acheived nothing.
Ideally I think a lining of foil covering the complete inside the duct would work faster and reduce the effect of the sun, not to mention looking more professional, but I only tried it as a "proof of concept" exercise. Getting inside the duct looks like a pain too. Yet another example of the benefits of heat shielding rocket science to mankind !
I'm surprised at the lack of feedback on my solution. I was expecting a medal or hearty handclasp at least. It works for me and has done so for 5000km in outside temperatures ranging from 12 to 41 Celcius. Hot sun shining on the black plastic under the wipers does not seem to matter.

My heatshield is made from Al foil from a flattened bbq griller pan and I know it looks naf, but you can easily prove/disprove with Alfoil. Let me know your results and I promise not to be offended.

There is likely a way to disable this, there often is on Hondas and Toyotas at least. It involves turning/holding various knobs on the center console and or A/C area.

Did it for my RSX, now I have the option to run the compressor or not during defrosts.

As for our twins, I'd guess it might be done through the TechStream thingy at the dealership since you can do just about everything else with it. Actually getting a tech to look through all the various options is another story. And just getting them to acknowledge they can even use the Tech thingy for you is the first hurdle.

Do it with gold foil heat reflector tape, make it look nice and you'll probably get responses. They sell it at most auto parts stores for $10-$15. I would try this but I wouldn't be able to give you an answer until next summer as it already cold as balls here

My vents stayed closed and my windows stayed open last summer but I will want to change that next time around for highway driving at least.
