How do you ### your car?!

Hey Everyone,

I tried searching unsuccessfully for a cheap reliable way to put numbers on my car for an upcoming autocross event this Saturday.

I have never done an autox before and was looking into magnetic sheets from staples to cut numbers out of....or using a sign shop to make me some...?

I am in a time crunch so I'm sure there are places online that can do exactly what I want, but what do you guys DIY with?

I'm probably going to end up just using masking tape but I don't want to look like a total newb.

Appreciate the help if anyone replies!

Magnet will eventually scratch your paint. When not in use store them in bags and away from your garage. One spec of crap between it and your paint will = disaster for the OCD paint guys.

Masking tape is fine. Go out and have fun. Don't worry what others think. Tape won't make you look any worse.

We still use tape... although we now use Gaffer's tape.

[ame="http://www.amazon.com/3M-Cloth-Gaffers-Tape-Black/dp/B000BQ8AN2"]3M Cloth Gaffers Tape 6910 Black, 48 mm x 54.8 m 12.0 mil (Pack of 1): Amazon.com: Industrial & Scientific[/ame]

It's pricey, but totally worth it.

Yes, I used to be in production at one point in my life...

If you buy gaffers tape in bulk.... please let me know. I die a little bit inside every time I pay retail for a roll.

Currently using pro-gaff...

Also works great for holding on bumpers and such; proven to hold at 140+ speeds, and sagging BRZ bumpers at 130+ speeds.

Scotch Blue or Frog tape are most popular. I wouldn't bother dropping money on something more long term than that until you know if you will be attending regularly.

Pro-gaff is the ONLY gaff we use haha

I went to home depot at lunch and picked up a roll of blue painters tape and some neon pink and neon green "duck" tape. Gonna lay out a blue rectangle of painters tape to protect the paint and then put the neon duct tape on top for the numbers. Should be pretty garish and unsightly

You want 30 mil magnetic roll or sheets, print the numbers out , tape them to the sheets/roll and cut using a swivel x-acto blade.

If you wipe the numbers on your pants or a rag it will remove , any particles that would damage the paint. Also remove any dust from the car using a spray detailer.

The usually come in black or white.

Print numbers on paper and tape them on.

or

I do magnets and haven't had any issues with scratches. Just makes sure they are clean. If I need to fab some new ones, I'll cut up some magnetic vent covers. You can cut them up with scissors pretty easily. Print some numbers and use them as a template to cut the magnetic material.

There are a few places online to order magnetics. Do a little search.

And if you do use tape, make sure it contrasts well. If I have to see one more black car with blue tape numbers, I'm going to punch a kitten.

Also, if you want vinyl numbers cut for your car, we can do that very affordably as well. Any size, any font, etc.

use vinyl numbers

I have used masking tape, but for a few bucks, you can get nice vinyl ones if you know your number in advance.

www.edecals.com

(more specifically http://www.edecals.com/custom_decal_..._designer.html)

I've used these magnetic decals for 15+ track events and at 130+mph. As mentioned above, it might not be the best solution if you're super OCD about your paint but if you just want something easy for the track to slap on in no time then I would recommend these.
