That's not my point... as others have pointed out, it's a legal document. All I am saying is that this is a pretty universal "industry standard" that pretty much every car maker has adopted.

You know what's funny? Go on Google and search "______ break in period", insert your favorite car manufacturer. All the various forum threads are just like the ones on here, with people for/against a break-in period and generally everyone following the same procedures (500-1000 miles of varied RPMs, no redlining, etc etc)

The only way to determine if this works or not, is to separate a large enough sample set of owners who have owned their cars for over 10 years from new, and separate that sample into two groups of people who did a "recommended break-in procedure" and those that did not. And then, analyze the fuel and oil consumption of the cars after 10 years, as well as average maintenance costs of said vehicle.

I really don't think any car maker has this type of data, and until this data is published it's all just my word vs your word on the internet.

Break in recommendations are all about not being harsh with a cold engine more than anything else.

I think they do, or at least someone does. With some of the claims people make about how beneficial/harmful certain break in procedures are you'd be a fool not to funnel some of your millions of dollars of R&D into running this test, after all it's only a test that doesn't require a huge team of engineers, all it takes is a couple of interns over a summer with a couple engines and some automated loading and drive cycles.

If they did have the data what would they gain by publishing it? They will have spent millions of dollars and just handed the answer to the competitors.

But agree, we're all just small fish on this issue.

I go back fora new owners meeting on Thursday. I will enquire about ebrake boot. If it was supposed to be red, I'll be feeling pretty ripped off.

did u read the post where a 14 owner does indeed have the red stitching?

its not the boot that has it, its the leather brake handle that has it... its shown in some of the renderings if you look at the 14 scion interior pictures on their site... its actually better because if u want the matching boot, its pretty cheap to buy one from subie and easy to replace... but to replace the entire ebrake its pretty expensive

actually break in is about sealing the piston rings evenly (hence no constant RPM) for maximum performance after the break in period.

About 20 of the my14s that I seen do not have the red stitching on the brake handle. Maybe it's a regional thing. You can get the BRZ boot and brake handle with red stitching for less than $200.

Nobody said it wasn't. I said break in recommendations (I.e. the manual) are about not being harsh on a cold engine.

If you'd like your rings to seat properly you won't follow lawyer written procedures.

Allow the engine and fluids to warm completely and then drive it with some common sense but just because an engine has less than 1000 miles on it is no reason to not drive it in its full range. I would avoid just hanging out in the upper arm ranges for extended periods until after you get the original motor oil out of the car but beyond that drive the car.
