MotorTrend Tests Tires on Mustang, BRZ, 328i

This was posted on the BRZ boards, but I thought folks in the Wheels/Tires section might be interested:

I saw this yesterday. I wonder how each would have done using the same tire brand and model.

Seems kind of dumb doing 3 cars and different set of tires for each car. They should have just done 1 car and multiple tires or 3 cars with same set of tires.

All they proved/showed was better tire = better lap times. Does anyone ever question that? Oh well. I was really hoping they would run the PSS on the brz, since that is what I will personally be switching to.

They should of tested the stock tires as well so we have a better idea of how fast the performance tires are.

I do not think the comparison was meant to compare the cars. It was meant to compare the steps in performance tires. Besides, the Mustang has the best final time but the BMW has the best final tire.

I was surprised that the Mustang wound up with the fastest lap, but even more impressed that the BRZ hung with both these cars...within 0.4 secs of the BMW's best, and 1.1 secs of the Mustang's best time.

Of course the driver was Randy Probst, driving on a very familiar course.

I'm just saying it should be common sense that better tires = better times. I guess showing how much tires can improve your lap times is interesting, but like I stated before it could have been done with one car and more tires.

Instead we just got some arbitrary tires and cars with no correlation between them. If they at least kept the tires upgrades the same for all three vehicles we would have some basis for comparison of the vehicles. As is the three different vehicles basically served no purpose.

They used so many different tires - because it was sponsored by Tire Rack. They have to get some advertising time in somehow.
