Posting here since this thread seems the most relevant.
About 3 weeks ago I was driving out in the desert on the way camping. About 2 hours in I get off the freeway and hear loud popping under the hood, stopped and pop the hood and didn't get any codes and the engine seemed OK. Fast forward a few days and were going home and I see a CEL. Pulled the code when I get home and its a P0351. The code clears itself and I pray that it was a false alarm.
This last weekend took a 2 hour road trip to Bakersfield and the CEL comes back. Babied the car all the way back home and take it to my dealership to look at it. Service manager pulls the code, sure enough its P0351 again but tells me that I'm over warranty at 38k and that they cant work on it on Sun. No worries I have the extended warranty and I'll bring it back on Monday. Monday morning I head back over there and notice that the CEL us gone again but now the engine feels like its suddenly lost 10-20% power. This time they take it in and look at it for 2 hours and tells me that they can't fix the issue since its intermittent. Techs notes were: CEL found in storage, code was cleared and test drove it. Car is performing normally. More info needed, suggest changing coil packs.
Extended warranty won't pay for the labor since the code was cleared, and they can't pinpoint the issue. Power train warranty doesn't cover the coil packs or DI either apparently. My choices are pay $500+ for the labor and parts out of pocket to replace the coil, which they can't guarantee will fix the issue or go home and continue driving my gimped car till the CEL comes back. At a lost of what to do now? Can't track it, or do any more modding for fear that they will try to deny my EW and I'm stuck driving a potentially ticking time bomb until it self detonates. *sigh* FML

Edit: added techs notes

2.5 track days. The .5 was cause I left midday once... had the car 16 months now.

Looks like you and me probably have similar build dates. Mine was built in March 2012. I attended one full track day with mine. Granted, I didn't push my car very hard. No symptoms...yet.

Do you rate yourself as driving pretty hard at the track?

New to tracking so I'm more concerned with improving my skills and learning the characteristics then pushing the car.

That's very concerning that someone new to tracking can do this to an engine. Guess this car is just a ticking time bomb.

This issue has totally sapped my zeal for this platform... I find myself conflicted while driving and looking for ways out of my purchase when not. If I had known that this purchase would have caused the amount of stress that it has I doubt I would have gone through with it. I flogged my last subie mercilessly (And babied it maintenance wise) and never, ever worried about it. This one, I'm paranoid for every little noise, and even little issues make me irrationally irritated because I feel like the car is a ticking time bomb.

The failures may be a very small percentage, but the fact is that both of my closest 86 owning friends have had the exact same issue. Small sample size or not, the chances of two different cars owned by different people that both know me both having the same issue, if it isn't systemic, are extremely small. It's like the CEL. When it first started happening everyone said, "Well you know, the forum is a very small subset of of the 86 ownership, and people with issues are much more likely to be vocal." The next thing I know I'm dealing with that exact issue. One blown engine? Crap luck. Multiple blown engines across the country, even a small multiple, points to a bigger issue whether the skeptics (or Toyota) want to admit it or not.

I'm just waiting for Subaru to come out with an update. I think I'll give it some time. If I don't see anything concrete, I'm most likely selling the car and going back to a Honda.

You ever get the feeling like their just pointing their fingers at each other and Toyota is like "You guys built it!" And Subaru says "Well you're the one who designed it...."

i am sorry to hear that.
either both/or DI seal/injectors + coil packs needs to replaced and get new flash to prevent damage.

like you said, either sell the car or get them replaced at reputable shop.
i would replace them with better upgrades if available and you know you won't have this problem in future.

Were you on 91 octane during the track days?

I did a search for "10 Series" in this thread, but nothing came up.

Question: has anyone with a 10 Series had this issue?

If the problem still exists than it's bound to happen to a 10 series. It's all the same hardware, so no reason it wouldn't.

Not necessarily. The 10 series may have the latest ecu calibration file, which supposedly fixed the issue.
