This thread is nonsense. Mixing together blow off valves and wastegates.

An internal wastegate will never perform the function of a blow off valve.
The wastegate regulates boosts by preventing the turbo from building anymore boost.
It does this by venting the excess to the exhaust. (or atmosphere if you have a dump pipe)

The BOV eliminates compressor surge.

(Compressor surge - the event where the pressurized air in your intercooler piping stops when the throttle body closes and bounces back towards the compressor blades of the turbo.)

The blow off valve will protect the turbo.

Venting to atmosphere is only better if we are talking about wastegates.
Recirculating is always better if you are running a MAF setup unless it is blow thru, in that case.. it doesnt really matter.

BOVs can be on either the hot or cold side but performs best on the hotside.

every car with a turbo needs a bov. the only exception being very, very low boost systems (< 5psi) and even then, the only reason not to install one would be to save money. that chopping sound you're hearing isn't cool... it means your compressor is being stalled by the pressure in the charge pipe. that's bad, in any case.

Some racers choose not to run blow off valves to increase the response time between shifts. A few of the crazier time attack cars have no blow off valve.

You understand that the main benefit of not stalling the compressor, aside from not damaging it, is that it helps spool between shifts right? It makes no sense at all that not having a bov would help spool, or anything else other than your wallet.

I just got off the phone with FullBlown and with my Greddy Turbo kit pushing 14psi--which is max for the OE waste gate--on E85 they were able to get near 300whp. LJ is going to weld the flange on for me since I decided to have one [BOV] put on. I'm not looking to race or anything otherwise I would have went with FullBlown's turbo kit and setup. I just can't wait to pick her up Friday!

BTW, FullBlown did a great job on doing all the installs and tuning. I'll be sure to write up a good trader report. Thanks.

Make sure you get the Dynojet data files from him so you can post some nice graphs. I would like to see a boost plot for the kit as well as I think this is the smallest turbo kit on the market currently.

I will be sure to upload them for everyone to see. That way everyone can see what the current Greddy kit is able to do. Though I will need to find a place I can post the project pictures of the installation and the graphs. I took a lot of pictures during the turbo installation!

I've contacted Greddy about installing it and should be no problem on the hot side of the turbo.

Basically, my question is should I just keep the stock Greddy setup with the fludder noise or should I add the sick sounding BOV? Actually, they both sound pretty cool. And will adding an external BOV degrade the turbo's performance design?

Thanks all!
I think you are mixing your terms. Sounds to me like you want to know if you should install an External Wastegate, NOT blow off valve. Blow off valves go on the charge pipe, not the hotside of the turbo.

This thread seriously is hurting my head.

Wastegate =! BOV/BPV

Internal, external, whatever. They're not performing the same function.

He didn't really mix any terms other than saying hotside of the turbo instead of hotside of the intercooler. The only confusing thing is he said external BOV when we generally consider all BOVs to be external although those new fangled BW turbos have them internal BOVs. At no point did he want to change his wastegate I think he just wanted to point out that his is quiet since it has an internal wastegate so he wants some turbo BOV noise.
