Removing a fuse to reset the ECU?
For Toyota's, you can remove the EFI fuse for 5 minutes to reset the ECU; is there a fuse on the 86 I can remove to reset the ECU? I'm hoping not to have to remove the negative cable from the battery. I searched but couldn't find anything on this site and my FR-S has 4 EFI fuses, and I'm not even sure removing all or some of them would reset the ECU. I want to reset the ECU because I put on a new catback and intake and feel it won't hurt to reset the ECU.

The time it takes you to find that information, ou could have already removed and crossed the battery cables for 10 minutes, reconnect and be done.

I guess if he plans on do it more than say 5 times, it will be worth finding the info out one time over removing bat. connector every time.

Actually I'm sitting at my desk at work so I have the time to wait to see if someone has the answer. I'm trying to avoid reprogramming the radio, syncing my phone etc. Pulling the negative takes more time than pulling a fuse.

the brz radio saves my settings when unhooking the battery. i do have to turn the gear indicator back on everytime though.

In looking at the wiring diagram found on this forum, it looks like the 7.5 amp EFI +B fuse is the one to pull which is the same for a Toyota. This runs from the battery directly to the BATT pin on the ECM.

Yeah, only thing you loose is shift indicator and MPG counters. Which I believe you loose over fuse pull as well. But more power to you for figuring it out. I re read that post and it kind of sounds like it, but I wasn't being an ass. lol

Just as a follow up on this; I pulled the fuse and it did do a reset and I didn't loose anything like mpg counters, etc. After the fuse pull, the first time I hit the key it didn't even crank, the second time it did. I ended up doing the fuse pull a second time because I did not idle the car for the recommended 5 minutes and the car was running pretty poorly. After the second time all was fine.

What is actually achieved by resetiing ecu ?
Other than resetting DTC [cel codes] and a couple of counters like time since dtc reset and distance since dtc reset. Fuel trims and knock learning parameters appear to be a continuous learning process so i am unsure what you guys reckon you are achieving by resetting the ecu. As far as i can work out the ecu will learn as far as its parameters and limits allow on its current tune any changes that are made ie difference in fuel or small mods. Yes resetting the ecu will set these parameters back to the default levels but they would 'learn' anyway, would it learn faster ? the ecu is monitoting parameters and learning all the time it never stops doing so. watch the ecu learn differences in ethanol content on e85 tunes or it learn new timing when you put in 91 or 87 octane, unlikely resetting ecu will achieve much. It will learn this stuff in seconds. |
