I'd be interested in a FT86 with a supercapicitor KERS type system, but only if the weight gain and increased vehicle complexity is minimal.

A fellow I saw at the gas station a few days ago saw my FR-S and mentioned how he had just seen another in Death Valley in camouflage and Hybrid across the back.

Check out the engine... that's a racing engine!
![]() This image was posted by Garrett. Apparently the turbo is made by Garrett. But yeah, it would be flipping sweet if they could manage to make a hybrid that drove the front wheels and made it AWD while retaining the predictable feel and low weight. Somehow I'm skeptical though...

I'd love to see a performance hybrid option come to the 86, but I'd want more control over how and when the extra power was applied especially if a 4 wheel drive electric system is used. I mean, this is a drivers car per-say.

I don't believe it. This goes against the "simple, lightweight sports car" concept that they originally built the 86 on.

All wheel drive in the 86 would ruin it's driveable nature. AWD is a superior method in all weather conditions, but I believe you lose a little driver involvement in dry conditions. Can't they engineer the KERS system to add torque (much needed at lower RPMs) to augment the REAR drive only?

I'd imagine for torque gain they would need to put the electric motors at the wheels instead of inline with the drivetrain

That's what they've said a 440+ HP hybrid Supra for 2015, we shall see I suppose. Seems like the unicorn though, it better damn well happen,... a new Supra that is.

Would be interesting. I wonder how weight it would add and how much else they would have to change to compensate for that weight and added power. |

I imagine maybe a couple hundred pounds if that. Then again it is an aluminum block so it could be pretty minimal.
I know they would definitely need to upgrade the tires for all that power. As it is now if I let in the clutch too fast when making a turn i sometimes go a little sideways, much to my wife's dismay

This Yaris uses a GRE (Global Race Engine) built by TMG which will be powering competition Rally and Touring cars very soon. There was word that a road version might become available but even then it would add thousands to the cost of a car. Given that no one has even seen this Yaris move under it's own steam it looks like a very expensive concept that I doubt will see even limited production.

Unsprung weight is still a problem for in wheel motors. Body mounted with axle shafts works but then you may as well put it between the engine and transmission.
