Couldn't wait... here's the surprise!

Hello all

I hope it's OK if I made a new thread about this! This was a 'paint' in the ass

Two weeks ago, I got a great deal on an untouched Five Axis rear spoiler.

It was from the first person I met and talked to who also owned an FR-S, same color as mine. He had his for a year, was dropped/wheels/kit. Much cooler than mine, to say the least :P

Regardless, I mention this because, in that one year, he seemed to have developed quite a passion for the car, at least aesthetically.

I told him how I wanted to paint the spoiler black (in addition to the roof) to contrast with the tails.

"Nooooo!", was his reply. He was very adamant on not ruining the lines of the car. He also happened to work at an auto body shop like me. So ...I respected his opinion and was open to his ideas.

With the spoiler mocked up, he tossed up his idea, and after a minute of visualizing... I was sold.

So, today, I was at the shop at 8:00am. Drove home at 3:30pm. I have not painted in years, so a guy from our shop painted the car. (Thanks, Al!)

Here are the results, :

Initial mask-off to prevent damage to surrounding panels. All mouldings/antenna removed.

Prepped, washed... ready for booth.

In the booth, time to dry off the car as much as possible.

Covered up!

Please cut on dotted lines:

Wax & Grease remover on all painted surfaces. Tack cloth to dry.

So... do you have a clue yet ?

The top is going to be black. Here is a better look a the line. It is DEAD center of the curve. Very tough line to follow.

Test fitting the spoiler....

...and it's no good Does not flow with spoiler. So...

The top black panel was widened ever so slightly, to expand a bit over the curve:

This time around, it follows the lines of the spoiler much better

Acceptable. Very acceptable. (You can't see what I could. Sorry for crappy cell pics!)

It's a done deal...

Here's the spoiler. Only the forward most partition is going to be black. Ass-end to be Firestorm Red :

Time to mask off anything we don't want black:

Don't forget the spoiler! (We shot the black first on it):

Time to mix some paint....

DAMNIT! I WENT OVER BY .1 GRAMS! ....I forgot to "correct & recalculate" It'll be alright though

First coat of black (spoiler not shown):

Black dried... taped off spoiler on opposite side, and painted it red:

Time to clear

FR-S CLEARED!

Spoiler gets cleared as well:

The only dust nib in the whole job... Got a few fisheyes, but luckily, we were able to kill those

Now before you bake the car... Remember it's still wet from the washing! Undo as much plastic sheeting as possible (because evaporating moisture will cause it to cling and literally embed into the clear. Pain to take out!"

And that's it for now

I will tell you... the black looks like a GLASS. I am very happy with the results.

After I buff the car and put it together, I'll post some finished pictures. I left the spoiler at work on purpose :P gotta let this sit for a bit.

Oh, and... before we painted anything, NOTICED MY FIRST DENT!

Hopefully, dent wizard can take it out... stay tuned later this week

Thanks for reading!

MUCH LOVE TO THE FR-S, the star of the show

Can't wait to see it with the spoiler mounted and all the tape and platstic removed. From what I can see so far looks really good!

I was debating on vinyl, but in the end, you can't wax vinyl :P

Ultimately, it's sheen is no where near what's possible with paint. I like shiny things

I put everything together.

Did not buff anything, did not clean off any fingerprints, did not take off overspray.... so please pay no mind to that!

Here's some night shots, sans spoiler:

Dat ass. I think it looks damn good even without the spoiler.

The light just melts over the trunk. (In this pic, you can see the rough edges on the trunk though, hehe)

A bit further back.

Not the best pic, but just trying to show the luster. (I was standing almost 40ft away.... big lens :X, could't find stock lens for camera)

Spoiler pics in a few days Gonna get the car detailed finally, pretty much done with the body for now.... now I can move onto other things

EDIT: I still have dealer plates, yes... little issue with registration, that, THANK GOD, was finally resolved today. Custom plates soon

Good show bro! I'm a big fan of two tone paint jobs. Bonus points if you figure out some way to extend the darker color onto the hood somehow.

The roof and trunk look killer. Those two stripes scream ricer and KILL the kudos you get for the two tone theme, which if extended to the hood would look BA. It is my opinion, not yours, and also your car, not mine.

I plan to get a different hood, and add in the two tone, but I am waiting until spring to do any $$$ mods. Stripes will suffice for now!

I have to get winter tires and wheels and/or a beater first

paint the rear bumper, aka the black plastic bit around the exhaust. imo its dull color clashes with your overall sheen
