So as to the Australian price........For me, the car HAS to be UNDER $40k DRIVE AWAY.
Anything above $39,999 Drive Away and I may as well get a brand new WRX.

Or commodore or falcon or aurion or many other cars
This isn't mx5 which was pretty much in a class of its own

$40k is actually SsangYong Rexton money, so I take Lobo's point.

I was just adding to lobos point
You can get all the cars I listed for that price or less.
It would suck if this car was over 40
If it does REALLY BAD because of sales toyobaru will think noone is interested, rather than being too expensive.
I am complaining because I want to see new models for years to come. My decision for purchase will be if I can fit and how it drives (I'm 200cm) in that order
If its close to my 8 and I can fit and the price isn't rediculously il buy the 1st one

Well yes one COULD buy a commodore/falcon/whatever

I am just saying, I don't care THAT much about RWD and compactness to skip over the WRX if they end up being too similar in price.

Honestly for real world application, a WRX would probably provide the same thrills. Don't need a track car, I have the bike for that.

I would get a wrx if this car was 40k + and the wrx used only 8l/100km instead of like12.

Would get a Golf R if they were 40k as well

I'm driving a WRX now. I'm still on the ropes about downgrading to the 86. No offense. I love the 86. But if the price is +40K for the 86, I'll hold out for a 2013 WRX/STI.

My Liberty runs on E85 and still gets better than 10l/100km. Driven as slow as the BRZ will be, a WRX would be closer to 8 than 10.

And the Golf R could be $20k, I still wouldn't want one.

agreed on the WRX sentiment.

owning a hatchback, even a 2 door is super practical. with the 2011 WRXs getting the STI flared guards, they look good, have more doors, better rear seating, and a hatchback, in addition to higher displacement, turbo, and AWD.

This translates to vastly superior practicality and comfort, greater power, and better utility (especially if youre a snow-goer like myself).

Even selling my 180sx and buying an 86 makes me think 'well, I can never move my bass amp in a pinch again' and 'its not going to be as exciting, just newer' and 'will miss the boost hitting and the BOV and exhaust crackles and other noises'

I dunno. I like the IDEA of the 86, but the price for what you get is putting me off.

Hah, although I dont live at home anymore, mum has an 02 outback that I have the option to use when i need it.

band stuff seems to be wrapping up so the necessity to lug my gear around is a lot lower which is why I can now consider a hatch-less car.

but 40k.....i mean not a fair comparison but you can get an R34 GTR for that money....

I guess a lot of us agree that paying over 40k just about pushes the car into the 'not worth it' category. I want this car, I really do, but part of the appeal is the possibility of it being 35, maybe 37ish thousand. Above 40k there are just too many options out there.

I honestly can't see Subaru selling a car with a 2.0L NA boxer engine for a very similar price as a WRX with a 2.5L Turbo boxer engine. I mean, it's not like the WRX isn't focused at the enthusiast so the only people that would choose the BRZ would be those who cannot drive turbo's, or just REALLY love RWD or the looks of the BRZ.

I just don't see that market being big enough for them to justify a 40k+ price.

But...we shall see.
