Good luck with that. Some people who have stuck with their original pumps are seeing the crickets fade once they get past the 10k mark. At this point, replacing the pump only prolongs how long your car will have crickets.

RX-7s tend to have a lot of drivetrain slop, even with a new driveshaft (FD owner here). A lot of that comes down to tuning, since rotaries do not handle low loads as well as piston engines. I actually notice two "jerks" on my 7, one is due to the injectors cutting off rather abruptly when closing the throttle plates (ecu limitation...), the other feels like stored energy in the powerplant frame is being released to the differential casing. The second jerk is likely caused by the first.

I have noticed that yes, the FR-S' drivetrain can be seen as a little loud if you compare to many other modern cars. Compared to a modified FD, our twins' Aisin may as well be silent (to me). NVH with the twins is far, far less than an RX-7.

Not saying your situation is normal. Hard to convey loudness through typing. Not sure what was done to your FD (or FR-S), but 7s typically have a lot of NVH. I wouldn't expect the same level of roughness.

The drop into first from neutral can be loud sometimes for me, same goes for first into second. I didn't think too much about it though since it's my first manual car in a long time and I just don't remember the two manual vehicles I'd learned on enough. My motorcycle (Kawasaki Versys) also has a loud and noticeable "clunk" when dropping into first from neutral, but I know that is normal for that transmission (everyone with a Versys comments on it).

you guys are forgetting that this forums represents just a small fraction of BRZ/FRS owners who know/care about what chirps are.

I saw a BRZ yesterday and the guy started up and it was chirping like crazy. I was like, how do you feel about the chirp and he looked at me like, wtf you talking about. I told him and he was like, oh, I figured that's just the sound the car makes.

Yeah, I think I went a couple thousand miles before I caught the crickets. I'm at almost 18,000 miles and still chirping, but if it ain't hurting nothing, I'mma leave them. :-\

more like a clunk when I gear out to neutral or change gears. Doesn't bother me

Well I took my car to the dealership and they were great! They tightened every bolt on the undercarriage, including the drivetrain of the car. They then said they would order the fuel pump and all of the gaskets needed and change it tomorrow. He said he has changed 4 fuel pumps to the new ones and that fixed the problem on them all. When I left the dealership all of the slop in the drivetrain was gone, including the clink the rest of you described when changing gears. Me an the mechanic think it was a combination of loose bolts. My bet is on the transmission mounts. She drives smooth now. Hopefully this fuel pump fixes the crickets, but if not they said they will continue to work the problem until they are gone. The mechanic told me if he just paid $30k on a new car, he would want those crickets exterminated too.

JSMIL, glad they're fixing you up!

Of those with suspected driveline clunks and tranny noise, how many still have the OEM exhaust? It might be part of the problem. I haven't had any of those symptoms running a Perrin catback. Their midpipe design is radically different than stock with a flexible mesh coupling about 4" long at the front end that might decouple NVH compared to the rigid OEM midpipe joint shown on the left. The Perrin system is also two pipes joined with another coupling back to the muffler effectively doubling the resonant frequency by cutting the beam length in half compared to the stock one piece system. I only had the stock exhaust on for an hour, not long enough to notice anything unusual, so this prolly a short-lived theory.

Not sure if you guys saw this, but looks like the only updates the 2014 FRS is getting will be the knee pads. No engine upgrades, no interior upgrades except for knee pads and the new stereo we have, and they are not getting our headlights as an option! Congrats on having a unique vehicle for at least another year!
