I like these, another reason to get one is that you just never see them, period.

I saw one of the 13 models recently then looked at the price.

I was like WTF?

You can buy an STI hatch and have a lot of money left over for mods.

Is there something I'm missing?
As a real world example. In the us so far they have only been sold once only 4 years and in limited numbers.

3 Things have typically happened in this market.

1) Some people are happy to pay the premium.

2) There always seems to be a good amount left over heavily discounted to about the price of a loaded gti.

3) Very low depreciation when purchased at discount.

Outside of that its a really nice gti, with better suspension, brakes, awd, and a stepped up engine (but no more vr6 sex). Kinda like a gt oriented sti basically.

It is argued that an sti isn't worth the price premium over a wrx, and its argued that an r golf isn't worth the premium over a gti. But atleast on the vw side the differences provided by the r model are true differences unavaliable on the lesser model (awd, 3.2 vr6 in past, buckets and irs on original r32)

One advantage the R has over the WRX/Sti that I thought FR-S owners would appreciate: it's a decently compact car with a relatively low driving position - much better than the WRX. When I sat in that thing in a Subie showroom it felt gigantic.

Yeah the dimensions of the current-gen GTI are nice and tidy. It's almost like an optical illusion -- you would never guess how much interior space it has given its short length (same length as the FR-S). Whenever I put friends in the rear seats, their first comment is usually how roomy it is back there.

I have to disagree with the low driving position though. My wife and I had been driving the FR-S to work everyday this past week. We took the GTI today and were just commenting this morning about how tall you sit in it compared with the FR-S. She likes the higher seating position, whereas I'm not a fan. Since a picture is worth a thousand words...

The minivan on the right is the GTI:

gf has a 11' tdi golf, it usually gets parked in the garage next to the frs.

dimension wise they're pretty similar externally with the exception of height.

either fits in the short bay with motorcycle parked in front.

I almost bought a Golf R until I learned you cannot fully defeat the stability program. I understand there are ways around it, however I did not want to spend that kind of money on a car and immediatly hack it just to turn the aids off.
I autocross and track too much to bother with it.

Yeah I was on a track with a bunch of GTI guys last weekend, and you could feel the stability control clamp the brakes in the middle of the carousel turn at Summit Point Shenandoah. It was funny - there were a bunch of us GTI's lined up for that turn, and without fail, you could hear all of our stability controls clamp the brakes at the same spot in the turn. *screech* ... *screech* ... *screech*.

This was with all nannies supposedly turned off. Argh, VW.

FWIW, I hear it may be possible to fully disable all nannies on the 2012+ models.

It is. Only in the US though. I even asked my dealer if I could order a Canadian-Spec car. They said: "Uhh no...why?"

Good job VW, you lost a potential customer.
