2014 Volkswagen Golf R official info drops

Find it here. 296 hp with all kinds of new tech to make the handling more neutral than the current nose-heavy plough. Looks like they may have a winner, if the PR bumpf is to be believed. Now if they can keep the price reasonable - say $42K in Canada. Nice looking in a conservative way, although not much there to differentiate it from the base Golf:

Wow 296hp from a 2.0T would have been impressive if it wasn't for the CLA45.

Jeez, that looks super-boring.

Why is this always such an overpriced car? I can't figure out why people buy them or why it's on the market. Don't get me wrong, if it was given to me then I would probably enjoy it. But it's $10,000 more than a GTI for just a little bit more power and center exhaust. It does look good though.

Is there something I'm missing? :iono:

But for 10 grand?

Meh. More if the same from VW's R line (impressive but bland and overpriced (educated assumption)). By the time it reaches NA shores, the MKVIII will be close to launching.

I agree I always liked the golf r but then I look at the price...

Id rather have a souped up wrx if I was looking for a 40k hatch

that would mean something if ff vs awd was that simple but the ff in the gtj is probably at least as good as the awd in the r

I think the market for these is not us. I think the R market is for guys like my dad, a bit older, more conservative than he was 20 years ago, likes the idea of awd, but isn't looking for outright speed.

He had a GTI but wanted a little more w/o having to mod or tune and the R was a perfect answer for him.

I don't know what their intention was...but it certainly didn't result in a race spec golf.

BlueDubbinTDI 08-21-2013 01:19 AM

Its going to be the same result as the current gen. With $1000 (downpipe + stage 2) it will as fast if not faster than a stock R for FARRR less $$$. except mk7 Rs seem to look worse than mk6s...

At stock power levels, maybe. But once you drive a stage 1 mk6 GTI (250hp/300tq), you quickly realize how important AWD is.

I think the current mk6 Golf R is misunderstood. Stock, yeah it's not worth it vs. a GTI. But once you modify it (335hp/338tq @APR stg2) it begins to make sense. Then you've got a car that's on par with the STI/Evo, but with a lot more refinement.
