If you do this make sure you get a spare engine for when the first one goes.

3500 lbs - not quite enough for a race car + 1000ish lb trailer (especially with spare tires etc...)

This is not the easiest car search I've done, but it's at least a little interesting

Most trucks have had more trans issues than the engine issue. I would be buying brand new and would eventually probably do a tr6060 swap

Love my 2011 F150 4x4 Offroad with 5.0 V8. The ecoboost looses a lot of power on hot days. 5.0 > ecoboost in warmer states. 17/22mpg average.

Something like this should suit you well. It's a Baldwin Motorsports Dodge Crew Cab 3500 equipped with a 6.7l Cummins diesel mated to a 6-speed auto. It also features Carli Dominator suspension, 39" Toyo Open Country MT/R tires, and King shocks. It weighs roughly 8,140 lbs, does the quarter mile in 13.1 seconds @ 103 mph, tops out at 131 mph, chucks out 700+ hp and 1,200+ ft-lbs of torque thanks to a little under the hood magic, and it gets 23 mpg on the highway.

It may be overkill, but it does meet every single one of your requirements. Enjoyable? I would say beating brand-new Mustang GT's in the quarter mile is enjoyable. Somewhat fuel efficient? 23 mpg for a TOW VEHICLE is more than just somewhat fuel efficient. Can it tow? I'd be willing to bet this sucker could easily tow the 4k lbs you need it to.

Holy crap! I could have sworn I read it was 5000lbs somewhere. Damn, now I have to check. I wonder about the CX-9.

EDIT: CX-5 is only 2000lbs because they have account for retarded Americans. In UK and AUS it's rated for roughly 4000lbs (1800 Kilograms) with a "braked trailer" (aka trailer brakes).

Or...you could always build something like this: 1931 Ford Model-A with a Cummins 4BT mated to a 3-speed automatic (no OD). The owner, Jeff Madden, claims it gets 41 mpg while pulling a "hotrod" trailer on the highway.

How about a uzj100 LC or a y61 patrol? Had these before (now i have uzj200) and these so f÷#$€ ing stout 4wd cars and tow anything you throw at. Comfort, so reliable, and so much fun when driven offroad don't remember exactly but towing rate is about 7000 lbs

Only downside is fuel economy. I average only 14~16 mpg mixed driving and ~10 mpg when towing 25ft boat.
