I was talking specifically about trade-in. An 02 in decent condition with that many miles definitely could see $6-7k privately

You wouldnt have problem selling your car....RSX-S would be one of the few cars I would buy it used....some on time basic maintenance and that thing would hit 200k+

Given your payout and likely trade/sell value this is good advice.

I would personally never go over 5 years on a car loan.

I paid off my fj in 3 years. Down paid 9 k cash and made 800 monthly payments in most of the payments.

Wasn't easy but its well worth it when you don't have anymore car payments to worry about.

Personally I'd stick with the TC until you have positive equity, but it's your money so have at it.

Aha! '03 RSX-S here and I've been watching the resale of my car for years now.

What I always do is randomly check auto Trader and find cars in my year/style and similar mileage and save them. Check back in a couple weeks and see if it sold while paying attention to the various prices people asked.

Do this with private sellers only, skip the dealer vehicles and you'll get a pretty decent idea of what to expect when your time comes.

I have relatively high mileage for my year(148k), but have seen several sell over the last few months for between $5k and $7k for the Type-S. some had more mileage, some had less.

Kelley Blue Book rates the trade-in for me right now around $4250-4750 based on NOT being excellent condition(I always try to be fair with my own estimates). Edmunds estimates it slightly lower.

So, go to KBB and Edmunds and fill out the info and find out for yourself. Be honest when you fill in the blanks because you can be sure the dealer will look for every opportunity to subtract money off the value.

Lastly, like the others said, never trade in because they have to give you the low number so they can sell it themselves for what it is actually worth. Think pawn shop, same idea. I plan to sell privately and expect at least an additional $1k or more.

The only time I've traded in without feeling butt raped was trading in a leased car while being 20k over the milage limit on the lease and with less than a year left on the lease. I managed to trade it in at slightly above payoff value so I leased another car with no money down and started the cycle again.
