So we tested rivals vs RS-3's on an STX rx8 this past weekend, concrete pavement. Ran rivals first, then switched to rs3's, and back to rivals. This was all done on the same course and same day. Overall I probably had 15 runs total?

My opinion is the rival seemed squishy. Although it was very easy to drive, I just never got the sharpness and quickness of the RS-3's which hurt me a lot in the slaloms. Also the braking of the rivals was not as good as the RS-3's, so you needed to brake a bit earlier and maybe trail brake a bit more. Latedal grip seemed comparable between the two, but with the rivals needing a higher slip angle.

On a 35 second course I was able to improve my time by over half a second. My co-driver (who is a mucho better driver than me) was able to get similar times with both tires but agrees that he likes the RS-3's more.

Overall I feel like the rival is a good tire with a larger performance envelope whereas the RS-3 has that peak performance that's needed to win. With a single car driver it may be difficult with the RS-3's since they need heat.

Just my thoughts.

Something looks very awry here--for STX...

Let the SM games begin--which is back home for me.

Pump & e85 @ ~8.5lbs--conservative tune for my HPDE work. Kill setting @ 13-14 lbs coming soon...

Now that I've witnessed this w/ my own eyes--I'm a believer. My main competitors in a 2000# SC Miata picked up .5 & .8 in the afternoon session on an even hotter(!) course, after they changed from Rivals to the R-S3s. I had the lead by .15, but that evaporated to a .3 deficit in the afternoon even though I somehow improved a tenth in the immense heat on the Rivals.

The Hankooks are 100% faster in hot conditions--no doubt in my mind now...

Bill, car should end up ~2550 w/o getting too crazy (yet). Shooting for ~400whp on e85 w/ higher boost. 275-285s on 9.5s pretty easily. The beauty of it is that a good bit of the upgrade was done in STX trim.

Aero will be another thing...

Now I need to change my thread's title somehow lol

Thx

yep...understand that.. Aero will be interesting on this car with a splitter and rear Wing.. Power levels sound decent and should be competitive. We know the handling is there.. I make some changes on my suspension that is HUGE.. Car is damn near perfect now. GL with the SM side of things..

Bill

oh.. contact a Mod and tell his you want to change the title of your thread.. he should be able to do it with no problem..

The Grice/Berry EVO is ASP, not SM.... although they, and Aaron Miller, typically run SM podium times.

Are you sure about that? I am pretty sure they went full SM this year?

On paper the car has as good of a chance as anything else. SM hasn't exactly been getting much faster over the years. 275s would allow you to get the weight under 2500lbs legally. 275/35/17 is a good size but the gearing still isn't great. Cusco makes a kit with a longer 1/2 gear I believe, otherwise I think there is a Lexus diff with a 3.73 FD. Auto-craft also sells a 3.73 and 3.9 kit.

Did you do the clutch/flywheel as well?

I am a couple years off from trying to jump to SM.

Earl,

Yes, went w/ an ACT 6-puck sprung setup (oh, the chatter @ times...), so I'm good for more power. Yeah, been thinking abt gearing... Right now it'll do almost 68 in 2nd w/ extended rev limiter & the 3.73s would give it 74-75. It's quite responsive right now above 3500; so I may need to explore that route later if it's crazy fast after things get serious.

I'm sure I can get it sub-2500, but I do want to daily it--for now @ least...
