These came out great man!

This picture is before or after the wetsand & polish?

What did you use for the polish? I got some headlight plastic polish.. should do the trick.

Also - did you prep sand the tail light before you sprayed?

Thanks..

I saw a black FRS this morning, with Red tail lights, and It looked amazing, Car looked exotic.

I have a whiteout, and the clears kind of vibe with that color, so i did not change it.

So i'm 3 coats of Metalcast deep and it's not glossy at all? It's a Matte finish.

Should I buff / polish the paint before clear or will the clear make it glossy?!!!

Help!!

EDIT: Nevermind! I sprayed the clear and it looks awesome! Pics to follow.

Update:

I used 2000 grit wetsand, glass cleaner (windex), then sprayed 2 coats of red with 15-20 minutes in bewteen. Then cleaned the new red coats and applied 2 clear coats with the Krylon Fusion clear coat for plastics. I also masked off the signal lights with masking tape.

I'm very happy with the results! I still like the valenti leds but this will do until I can afford those (unless someone wants to buy these of me)

Here's a quick cell phone shot:

So I finished up my tail lights this morning.

I feel like I should have put a few more coats of red but I didn't want to lay it on too thick and have it start to peel. In direct sunlight they're not as deep red as I would like. They still look 1000x better though so IDC.

Paint Used
  • Duplicolor Metalcast
  • Krylon Crystal Clear Gloss
  • Meguirs Plastic Polish

Method
  • Mask surrounding area
  • Mineral spirits wipe down (with gloves)
  • I did NOT pre-sand the plastic
  • 5 red coats total (3 light & 2 heavy)These went on matte and I got scared. The clear will bring back the clarity.
  • 10-15mins in between light coats with blow dryer
  • 20-30 mins in b/w heavy coats
  • 4 coats of Clear (the last heavy coat started to run a bit but you can't really see it until get really close at the right angle)
  • The last heavy coat of clear I let sit over night.
  • 2000 grit wet sand to get out the fish eyes
  • Meguirs Plastic Polish
  • Meguirs Quick Detailer

Also put on my purple Lamin-X fog covers:
