I'm waiting to buy a 14MY BRZ in spring, but now im going to see how these rumors play out.

2.5 NA all the way

The only reason the WRX went to 2.5 from 2.0 was for more power and to please the EPA. The 2.0 in the WRX for years before it got to America was busting out 600 to 800 hp by after market tuners in Euorpe. The 2.5 was a America only motor to make the hp to compete with the EVO here in America. And to please the EPA. The WRX still used the 2.0 everywhere else but America. There is no reason for a turbo, supercharger or 2.5 in the twins.
If you what more, you can buy it. That's the point, you can make this car what YOU want.

At the expense of new car warranty.

If the only real want from the average new car owner is just slightly more power and torque then I can see why Toyota is scrambling to give the customer what they want.

Isn't that the whole reason behind Toyota's rise to dominance? Building cars that people want at an affordable price?

Here's to hoping they do the next one with a proper Toyota engine.
Just not feeling the FA20 sounds...
Variable valve timing and lift for the next version please!
Get Yamaha to work their magic on it

FA20 with VVTL-i should fix the sound and bump the hp.

Belt drive mild hybrid is my bet. Toyota hates mild hybrids, but Subaru says they want to go that route, and this car is a Subaru. Put a 10hp AC PM motor in place of the alternator, dump the starter. Toyota has more than enough electrical engineering resources to get a supplementary capacitor system on board.

Boring the engine out a little is probably the easiest way but then they'll get taxed more in Europe and Japan and that's not good.

This is great because is increases fuel economy and increases low end torque. Then they can shorten the manifold and slip some bigger cams on.

Agreed, there's room for more innovation on this platform- look at how successful the electric supercharger was already.

I think an electric start-stop option for traffic use would be fantastic, if somehow they could give you an option to turn it on and off to start first gear using an electric motor, then use the engine after it's been turned over from 1st to 2nd, would be awesome because I don't like to run the engine while stuck in traffic on a hot day.

From Subaru of America: as long as do not change or mess with the internals of the motor. You can do anything you want, header back, supercharger, Turbo. Now if your local dealer will back that up is another thing.

Honda listened to people wanting more torque in the S2000 and the new 2.2 came in. People still argue about which engine is better, a lot of people like the original less torquy one because it redlines at 9k vs 8k. And then it happened to the Si.

A new engine might not be "the best". The FA20 has its qualities.

i wouldn't mind this at all. Although i do kind of wish my car wasn't so tiny, i'd be interested in trading it in for an upgraded engine with more power. Although, realistically, i'll probably end up trading it in when its paid off for the next gen mustang.

You guys are funny...

How much you think it would bump the costs to implement VVTi on 2 separate head on a motor? That alone explains why it's not done yet.

Nothing will happen in 2015 other than a cosmetic redesign.

In 2017 you will see a new version, probably slightly faster via a more powerful motor, also heavier and more mature.

If it's a 2.5 and it's significantly more powerful, but it's using the same 6Spd. transmission I might just buy the engine and swap it in rather than trade in.

Should be a relatively easy process as long as it's using the same tranny which I don't see why it wouldn't.
