The only power option I'm curious about is the hybrid electric drivetrain. Since it relates to my degree. There are a number of things that would pose a problem for Toyota's Hybrid Synergy Drive in the Twins. |

It says "the next generation GT86", but one of those upgrades will come in the 2015 revision of the current generation.
Frankly, I doubt this a lot. Mid-life facelifts and small improvements and bug fixes are expected, but for companies like Toyota and Subaru, I wouldn't expect an entire new power-train. Which means they would also have to upgrade headers, exhaust, intake, etc. I hardly doubt there will be such a major revision of a vehicle just for a mid-cycle. Unless the sales plateau much earlier than they expected, but I don't see that happening since dealerships still selling pretty much all their inventory upon arrival and we haven't even received the '14 models yet. I'm hoping for the upgrade, slightly bigger 4 cylinder with better fuel delivery system sounds good, leave the FI to the aftermarket. Look at the Civic Si, uses the 2.4L of the Accord (tuned of course) and does so amazingly well by its own, and it's a beast when FI is applied to it. |

How did that built in header work out on the new Si? When I was last reading everyone was up in arms over it but that was more than a year ago.

Very interesting. Unless they're planning to re-mount the new engine higher and further forward, their only choice to increase displacement on the FA20 would be boring it out (like Subaru did with the EJ257).

This is the problem with translations and vague hints by an engineer.. You could read this article 5 different times and come to 5 different conclusions
![]() I am not holding my breath. But I would love a more powerful engine option down the road... I just hope down the road is not 5 years from now... |

Tada is about to get a dose of big business reality. The entire industry is moving toward small displacement DI Turbo, its just the best way to build a performance 4 cylinder with todays efficiency and emission goals.

As I understand it, Subaru was having trouble developing and implementing an effective direct injection system. Toyota wanted a sports car with a boxer. That was the trade off, Toyota helps Subaru develop an effective direct injection system, Subaru builds the sports car Toyota wants. Because of THIS engine Subaru now has an SUV capable of 32 mpg freeway (new Forrester) and this technology will ripple into ALL of their other vehicles. Whether you like it or not the FA20 is the beginning of Subaru's next generation of engines, sure there will likely be an FA25 or whatever they call it but speculating on stuff that won't be happening for another two years just gives rumor mill blogs ad money. |

Still, excited to see what a NA FA25 could do if they go that route.

turbo FA20 2.5 liter engine hybrid system I suspect the turbo option would be the cheapest and easiest path of resistance and something Subaru is very good at ![]() The article really did not tell us anything concrete. Basically, they are looking at lots of prototypes and options. But I love the idea of a NA 2.5 engine with the option to supercharge or turbo it. |
