Great videos. The input from Torque really helped me to understand what were happening. It was great to see the interaction between throttle position (Load) and intake psi. Oil temp and coolant temp looked good throughout, but that's to be expected when the intake temperature is so close (+10F) to the ambient temp.

There were two AFR's. One was showing actual and the other never really moved much from 14.7. What was the second AFR? Was it simply the target AFR?

Also, at the end of the long up hill you said something like "we have tripped the 26.6 volts and oh shitted(?) the ?????." Did you actually trip something? What exactly did you say at the end?

The comment was in reference to the voltage limiter. When the system begins to heat up the voltage is limited to 26.6 volts. Boost is still available, but limited in duration. After laying off of it for 10 to 15 minutes or so things return to the normal 28.4 volts.

Full throttle Electric Supercharger Build Thread

Question I read through a huge chunk of this thread last night, but upon installing the phantom did you guys remove the stock box inlet ( sorry don't remember the technical term) that is in the front bumper? I removed this on my install of my afe takeda intake. I wonder if I would have to reinstall this if I went with the phantom.

We didn't the only thing that has to be removed from the stock intake is the resonater which attaches to the side of the box.

Initial Thoughts

Thank you
Early on the intrigue of creating an alternative force injection solution caught my interest. Reading the bantering, test results, the creation of alternate open source threads has filled a much need space during this time of the year with no Football on TV!

I would like to thank Rob for sending me the kit. Additionally the reviews created by Fenton, Bu-tang and Toma provided clarity on what to expect when engaging the electric supercharger (“ESC”). Taking the time to review the videos and dyno charts will provide any potential buyer a clear reference point on what to expect.

Driver Profile
Age – 41
FR-S Purchase Date – June 2012
Miles Driven – +/- 20,500
Vehicle Installation Expertise – 4.0/10 (Maybe a 3.0)
Modifications Highlights

Perrin
Everything listed on the website excluding exhaust, brake fluid cover and silicone radiator replacement tubes. Unfortunately for my wallet they know me by name.

JDM bling
Cusco - Front/rear tower bars, AOS can and differential brace
Greddy SP Elite axle back

Whiteline – Sub frame, differential and camber bushings

Miscellaneous
Nameless Performance (over/down pipe combination)
Nameless Performance Header (deposit made)
PST Carbon Fiber Drive Shaft
FT86 Speedfactory Stage 2 brake kit
Eibach 1” spring kit
Koni Sport Yellows
BFG Comp-2 Ultra Summer Tires (225 Front / 255 Rear)
Enkei Fujin 18x8 Wheels

Why walk in the same direction as everyone? New ideas lead to innovation and the electric motor is here to stay, ask Elon Musk.

Initially, I had no intention of providing a written review of the kit because I do not posses the technical expertise to answer all questions. Shit I have never had a car dyno’ed or messed around with tuning until purchasing my FR-S. All I like to do is drive and most of all my car of choice is the FR-S.

I like to talk not write, but it would have been unfair to people who are truly interested in the kit and give Rob congratulations on a simple cost effective approach that has dogged the FR-S / BRZ by many publications, writers, your grandmother, and every other individual that has compared this car to every other car possible……

THE TORQUE DIP

Everyone reading this tread including myself has spent some form money trying to mitigate “the torque dip’s” impact on driving. You know it, that lonely feeling between 3,000 and 5,000 rpms?

Lets just get to the point, the torque dip sucks and we all know. Some times traveling through it is like slowing cooking meat on a bbq, it is damn good when done, but does it really have to take that long? We have all attempted to address it without dropping $5,000 – $6,500 to purchase and install a traditional forced induction solution. WHY? BECAUSE we (specifically me) are cheap… There it is, I said, my balls won’t get pushed up into my stomach when I hit the accelerator with the kit, but my bank account will be just alright.

Now with that said, you will find it interesting that I also enjoy and learned how to use “the dip.” Once I understood the use and application of “the dip” my ability to handle and push the car to its increased (braking, corner entry speed, mid corner acceleration, etc.) with each upgrade. Small and large investments in handling, acceleration and breaking have contributed to the evolution of my personal FR-S / BRZ driving experience.

The ESC is an honest demonstration of Elegant Innovation and Simplicity

In many instances a traditional forced induction approach in itself can become unattractive to the non-hardcore car modifying enthusiast who considers long-term specialized maintenance, upgrades and costs in total ownership, especially an individual lacking automobile modification competence.

How Does it feel / compare?
I recently read a comparison of the twins to the new the Ford Focus ST and noticed a note about the ST’s ability to put out approximately 278 lbs. for 12 seconds . . . I thought to myself, that is a cool OEM integrated boost putting the car’s 0-60 time inline with the twins.

Now damn if Ford could come up with something gimmicky like that why is it that the collective engineering heads at both Toyota and Subaru could not come up with a simple not overly complex solution to address the torque dip? Think about it, you have Toyota’s battery technology (Prius) and Subaru’s performance competences looking at each other in the face.

It is a shame both companies missed opportunity to introduce a new forced induction approach that Rob has pretty much validated as a viable light weight power solution to boost FR-S through the torque dip and provide a little extra at top.

This ESC does not have BIG power, but BIG distribution potential.

Review (Installation and Performance)

Installation (6.5/10) – I really thought long and hard about this part. I hate to nit pick people but thoughts are as follows:

Battery Connection – I totally screwed this up. No need to go into detail, but after thinking about the install this by far the most challenging part of the install. At one point, I had to step away and rethink how to connect and during my email conversation with Rob it all came together on how I would approach the solution.

Battery Tie down – Interesting to say the least with the plastic block. As wonky as it looks the batteries are snug.

Activation / Meter Switch Cabling – Provide another 6 to 12” of cabling. A little snug and tight.

Concerning cabling, provide approximately 20 zip ties and identify the location (small bar under the rubber hood lining and engine brace locations in the bay to run the trigger cable).

Some simple updates to the kit will easily make the install easily a 9 for a beginner like myself. Personally I think Rob or someone should design a single preassemble / re-usable battery housing based on the demensions of the battery tray with power connections for each connection point the kit identified to avoid confusion. Taking the time to design a single house will also reduce the potential for battery movement.

Performance (Daily and Back road driving) (8.0/10) – Deep down I want to say 9, but I know I will get called out for being a fanboy. . . . Currently, I am learning the limits of the unit’s application. I have logged about 3-4 hours behind the wheel since the install. The unit has been pushed moderately due to the check engine light tripped. Hopefully this will be tuned out shortly and with doing so reduce my hesitation to get after it.

To the Die Hard Traditional Turbo / SC entusiest – Don’t waste your time you will be disappointed and only rate this as a marginal power solution and it will leave you craving more. You know what you want and you have the financial resources to achieve the end result. Starting here is a completed waste of your time. (4.0 / 10)

Mass Application – This kit is for you if you meet one of the following:

If you are looking to add a burstable power on demand feature with playful boost within reasonable vehicle design limits

OR

You want a forced induction solution at a reasonable costs structure with limited engine bay modification to exploit other vehicle upgrades and except the power output
OR

You want to take this shit off in 20 minutes and drop the car off at the dealer for the free oil change and service.

The installation of the kit has pulled together all of my previous upgrades into one nice package without significantly modifying the NA driving experience. Like Tada-san said in an early interview,.he wanted to something unique to create power like the concept of this car, well look no further.

Like the song says - "Anin't No Love In the Heart of the City" But Damn where is the Love for Rob and innovation?

Amazing how many people can't figure that part out. "Now with that said, you will find it interesting that I also enjoy and learned how to use the dip.

Nothing scheduled soon on the dyno, but eventually I will get there.

Just took the car out of an hour or so this evening with the new tune and things are improving.
