I'm looking at one or two of these, or possibly then step up from them. Heard them at the shop just outside the base here and was blown away.

If you're looking at 8's, here's another option. I'm installing 2 of these when I get home:

I am working on installing jl 8w7 in the rear side panels. I have done some preliminary designs and models and I have found that it is possible; however there are several major problems that must be overcome. First in order to achieve the necessary box volume you have to extend the box back over the wheel well, as well as all the way down. basically you have to fill the whole compartment. So the first design problem is how to get a box that size though a much smaller opening. I am playing with a few ideas including making the box in place and non removable, making it sectional, and lastly turning the compartment itself into a box. The next problem I will face is the excursion of the sub. I will have to modify the plastic panel in order for the sub to have the room it needs. Next I will most likely have to relocate the fuel pump controller which is on the passenger side. The last problem I have found so far is the air bag sensors. I don’t want to mess with them at all so I will try to build whatever I decide around them. I am doing a whole stereo build and this will be the last thing so its going to be a few months before I can offer results.

This was my solution. Sounds great after some tuning with he radio and amp settings. If you don't know how to fiddle with all the knobs and settings, make sure someone does. Makes a world of difference on how it sounds and how bad it rattles.

I really wanted to fabricate something using a shallow 8" in the rear speaker abyss the OP mentioned. I certainly think it's possible, but it would be quite difficult. The ONLY idea I could imagine working correctly involves cutting the interior panel to roughly the diameter the sub and attaching said inteior panel to the surface of the enclosure that would sit right behind it. If done properly, the sub faces the car's interior and no "moving air" gets behind the panel. Here was my idea:
Remove the interior panel, seats, etc. Frame up a basic mold area using thick cardboard, and use ~1/2" sheets of foam to create distance from the body panel. Lay up a layer or two of fiberglass to get the basic shape, and then remove it from the car and add reinforcement to the basic back shell. Reinstall and fabricate mounts using any availalble hard points inside the car. These will need to be rigid enough to support the enclosure's weight. Dry fit interior panel and trim fiberglass shell to fit, then trim an opening in the interior panel for the sub. Finish fabrication of the enclosure to meet the back side of the interior panel. Wire and install the enclosure, then interior panel, and then install the sub with an integrated grill. Fasten the interior panel to the enclosure using aesthetically acceptable screws, etc. If done correctly, the "moving air" is only in the car's interior, not behind the interior panel. it's a tricky job, and i'd love to do it, but I simply don't have the time ,energy, or willingness to get resin all over my car's interior. Instead I fabricated two small enclosures that fit in the back corners of the trunk. Despite some typical rattles at high volume levels, I'm quite happy. |

My vote is Bazooka Active 8" to 10" tube or any active compact sub is the best fit for this Twin. Bazooka tube is portable and so versatile to use for any cars. My plan to get one some day.

It'll fit if you remove the stock speaker. Sound deaden the heck out of the inside of that cavity and you will need to make a custom fiberglass enclosure to make it work 100%
Here is a reference shot of a old subwoofer and port I had from a while back. I was using these as reference to see how large that space could actually fit, a 10" is max... but will require cutting of the plastic panel. An 8" will probably fit without. I will take a reference shot of an 8" in that cavity Friday the 12th and post it that weekend for you. ![]() ![]() The 10" is sitting in the hole, if you lift it and support it properly it fits like a glove. |

This is a complete custom, 8" enclosure for the BRZ/86/FR-S from The SpeakerBox here in Huntsville. My car was used to create the molds but I have ZERO professional affiliation with them.
If you would like to touch bases with them, they have a Facebook page. The price is pretty reasonable and the fit and build quality is top-notch! The sound is incredible also! The box also comes out very easily which works well for me since I autocross and track my car but it stays perfectly in place during "spirited" driving in the corners. Scott

I am almost done with the rest of my stereo build, just have the driver side dash speakers left. You can see a pic of the passenger one in my garage. I have been working on refining my design for putting JL 8w7 where the rear speakers are and here is my latest plan.
First I am going to use sound deadening material to close all the gaps. I realize that this will still allow some flex which in my opinion is good because I would much rather these areas flex instead of the car body panel. Next I plan on making a wood and fiberglass composite panel to close the opening and mount the sub and speakers to. I will be making a sample of the composite soon so I can see if it will meet my needs. I will get some pictures of my work up when I get started. I don't have a lot of time or space to work on this these days. |
