8 inch Subwoofer

Have seen it suggested, but has anyone actually mounted an 8" sub where the rear speakers live? Don't need huge bass, don't want to eat into the boot space, and don't like things under the seat.

I will finally have my 86 delivered in December, and want to have all my stereo hear ready to install when it arrives.

I wouldn't recommend it personally. Even if you found some that were shallow enough to fit in the stock locations they would probably rattle the plastic panel like hell.

Pretty sure the rear speakers are 3.5"...don't think you will be fitting an 8" subwoofer there.

The rear is a 4" speaker, but if you take a look at the amount of open space back there, you could probably fit an 8" woofer there. But as stated above, you may have some rattling.

I would avoid putting a sub in a spot like that, i don't think its going to work the way you want. When my FRS finally gets here i'm going to put one of these in. I sampled one in my local audio shop and i was amazed, for an 8" it sounds awesome, its on par, if not better, then my current Alpine 12" type R. I was very impressed.

Where are you doing to mount it? Will be interested to see your setup when it's done.

Thanks to the others above for your thoughts too.:)

Just in the trunk, nothing fancy, just a normal box. It might move around a little bit during spirited driving, but i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

I've got a powered "8 Bazooka in my trunk right now. I have it mounted to a flat piece of wood, and have quick connects on all the wiring so Ivan pull it out if I need to. It adds just enough bass for me, and it was cheap(ordered it from Walmart online)

I've never gotten good sound out of a Bazooka

Trashed - I really like the idea of that JL sub. I'm going to hold out until I build a box for some subs I already have or until I get to lay eyes on JL's official Stealthbox. Regardless that JL box is really nice looking and I bet it sounds great.

hmm, that's really cool. Would be interested to see an installed piece that won't move during harder driving and can easily be removed if need be.

Yeah i'm really not sure how i'm going to do it as A) i don't have the car yet. B) i don't have the sub yet. And C) I haven't ever used a sub/box that small before. My current enclosure takes up about a third of the space in my scion tC, if i drive hard then it does move around a little but not enough to worry me at all because there really isn't enough room left for it to move around.

My original thought would be to have the amp mounted either in the spare wheel recess or under a seat(if possible) that way all i have to do is disconnect the two wires leading to the sub, remove it and its done, reconnect when i want to.

Any body know if there is room under the seats for a ~500watt amp?

Supermassive 10-31-2012 08:18 PM

You could fit an amp under the seats with the stock seat rails, but you will need a thin amp. If money isnt a huge concern you cant go wrong with JL Audio's line of HD amplifiers. http://www.jlaudio.com/car-audio-amplifiers-hd

I have an HD 900/5 and the amp is tiny, its hard to believe its packing 900 watts in a 5 channel setup (4x125, 1x500). The signal clarity is amazing as well. You can easily power a decent system with just one amp and it only takes up the space an actual notebook would. It's always funny to have people in my truck and blow them away with the sound and then they are floored by how something so small can pump out that power.
