Backed into a brick post...
Only 2000 miles old and it's already gone wrong. I feel sick.
How bad is it? Can it be repaired, or will I need a new bumper and body panels? I am furious at my own stupidity! I would much rather have a broken arm and an intact car, than this. |

Don't beat yourself up about it. You should see what my car looks like...
This looks like it can just be repainted, although there's only so much you can tell from a picture.... it shouldn't be a terribly expensive fix though. Take out in to a body shop for a quote!

New rear bumper and a tiny bit of fender repair/blend and you'll be as good as new. Don't sweat it my friend.

because of the location of that damage, you need to get it fixed asap. that area, where the bumper meets the rear fender is prone to rust. when winter comes all the dirt and salt will get stuck over there and it's gonna start to rust.

Hey you're not alone... Had about the same mileage when I backed into a knee high post when parking at work. I didn't even scratch or crack my paint but the light impact put a dent in my bumper. Just got it fixed 2 months ago and felt the exact same as you!
But yeah, don't beat yourself up... Its a car, $#!t happens, and it can be repaired.

Does everyone have bad luck at 2000 miles? A car rear-ended me at the same mileage you were at.

To OP, if you look in the same section you posted, I posted a similar account of what happened to me.. damage looks almost identical except yours is on the right-hand side.
It looks like you've slightly dented in your quarter panel - this can be easily fixed if you take it to an accredited/experienced panel beater. The rear bumper is made of plastic, so you only would need to respray as it looks like there is no significant damage there. I wish you luck with the repairs! |

its really not too bad you don't need new parts. a little body filler on the panel and the bumper will need some high build primer maybe some body glaze. I would have the whole quarter panel sprayed up to the edge of the door and then half way around the part close to the roof. (the sail) I believe its called. really good body shops can spray half the bumper and blend it in to save you cash. that blue will match really well. lighter colors are harder to match

Thanks for the responses guys.
I took it in yesterday to get an estimate at the local Toyota-certified body shop. The plastic in the bumper is torn up pretty bad, so they want to just replace it. The dent in the quarter panel can be repaired, and he assured me it would be indistinguishable from the undamaged side. He quoted me about $1500 for the total. I might go to some other shops for comparison, but that doesn't seem too bad for a like-new restoration. |
