I think you're making too big a deal about this. We know the approximate price range of the FR-S, we know it won't be under $21k and it won't be over $25k; if you're not prepared to pay that price range, purchasing this car, regardless of the announced price, is probably not a wise move.

I have a $42k budget for my next car, and I'm signing up for the First 86. I've dealt with Scion on a corporate and ownership level for 6 years and found that when you take a leap of faith, you're well rewarded.

Hitting the nail on the head. Ironic as it is, this forum may not showcase the best representation of serious buyers as seen with many posts in threads. Anyone can want the car but the individuals who can afford it don't necessarily troll threads and definitely don't care about a few grand difference in anticipated price/competitive segment price.

...a $25k car is not a big deal for anyone earning a bit above national average; $41,673.83 btw, ESPECIALLY for car nuts who regularly trim other expenses for greater auto affordability... hell the US average cost for a new car is $28,400!

They are also mature enough to keep their noses outta threads like these

Indeed. I think it's great and adds a bit of fun with the bragging rights. Plus this seems like a scheme from an exclusive car/brand; like a Ferrari raffle.

I don't see a valid reason not to enter, thinking it'll jack the price up is being a bit paranoid (no offense OP).

^^^ I am with them. I have already signed up with both scion and subaru dealers preorder lists and I plan on entering this too. I am not to worried about the Scions price. The subaru could add up pretty quick if you order the BRZ Limited fully loaded.

I plan on going for a spot on the list, but I AM aching to get this car and I already have the cash in full ready as well. I wont be financing at all, it will be a paid in full cash deal for me. I really want this car as a daily driver, my truck guzzles way too much gas and is tough to park in Boston.

Well, for those of us who want to buy this car, pending a test drive, and would do a refundable deposit, this is a great idea. Many dealers claim they're only getting 1-2 in per month at first, so if you go straight to the dealer now, you may go on a waiting list. For those who really want the car as soon as it comes out, this may be an option.

Now I want the BRZ, so I won't be signing up - otherwise if I wanted the car in May and not wait until mine is ready in September, I'd be signing up - multiple times.

There's no such thing as a free car... winners would have had to pay nearly $8,000 to Uncle Sam for their luck, and IRS payment plans and interest are not as favorable as a car loan.

Almost went last week to a local toyota dealership and put down a $500 deposit anyways. I think they did this because there has been many people already putting in there $500 down to be put in-line. I would have been second in Utah, a guy that worked there was #1. Maybe ill go in a week

^Being first won't make a difference. They'll randomly draw 86 out of all entrants after the time window has elapsed.

It sounds like a good deal to me. I don't believe that the number of people signing up for this is going to affect the MSRP of the car at all. I think they've already set the base price and this is just a nifty marketing campaign to add hype and excitement. I'll definitely be signing up, as I really really want to have one of these cars. The BRZ isn't an option for me, as I already know it's going to be much more expensive. The FR-S sounds like it's going to be in just the right price range for me to get a loan for it. I'll have to check with my bank once I find out how much it's going for.

Guys, Toyota executes business on a per quarter basis (at least when I used to work for Toyota in '06). Q1, Q2, Q3, and Q4. A rough forecast for the *next* quarter is announced to execs around the start of the current quarter. A solid forecast reaches the whole company (internally) towards the end of the current quarter. Let's use our predicament as an example.

Right now we're at Q1 start (Jan-Mar). Jack Hollis and co. recently saw the Q2 (Spring launch) rough forecast and decided,

"These numbers don't look so hot compared to Japan. We can't announce the price quite yet like they did. How can we nudge up the demand? Ah yes: the First 86 ploy."

First 86 is timed perfectly so business analysts can get their numbers in by the due date (March, Q1 end). Q2 prices can't be based on Q4 2011. Demand garnered during Q1 will *heavily* factor into the Q2 price. Granted, there might be very little change between Q4 and Q1, but Q1 is what matters (bottom line) for Q2 predictions. Simple logic.

This is the business model I've been exposed to in all companies I've worked for in the corporate world. If someone can refute this system with fact, please do.

Every car I've bought (new and used) was paid upfront in full from my own savings and I've got cash to get this one now but I'm aiming for the higher trims/packages. A lower base price will pull down the upper end. That $1k sway in price matters - could go towards my Roth or 401(k) or hookers and drugs

Cash is great. But with auto loans so low you might be better of getting a loan and using your savings to invest/pay off the loan over time.
