Glad I found this thread! I recently decided to start saving up for a 2JZ swap since it could be around the same price as turboing. I'm gonna be going 6 speed manual as well.

Can't wait to see the pics!

Well for just motor and tranny it may be the same price as a turbo kit but there are countless other expenses that add up fast. We did a swap with an SC300 and an auto tranny and it was still over $6k and we did the work. I agree it's an awesome swap but it's not a cheap one. But if you guys find some ridiculous deal on a V160 then please let me know bc I'm all in, haha

That's just me justifying it in my own head lol. I know it's at least a $10k expense without even building the motor, labor is going to be expensive but oh well! It'll be worth it in the end though

You're pretty far off the mark. As I recall, the stock engine comes in at about 200 lbs while the 2jz is nearly 400. Not to mention that the weight sits a lot higher on the chassis, and really has a huge effect on the balance.

And I will certainly not disagree with that last statement...the sounds that a 2J makes are magical. 4 inch exhaust and a big single....tire shredding power at interstate speeds and higher...that's justification enough and worth every penny, haha. I'll help you install it...I'm an hour from you anyways!

Nearly 400? It's nearly 600 for the 2JZ, plus about 150lbs for the 6spd.

A 2JZ in the FRS is meant for drag/drift. That's it.

Also, OP... what are you doing about the rear end? Going with the FullBlown diff/axle upgrade or what?

That's fairly close if you did everything yourself. I'm budgeting $25k for my 2JZ build.

I think ruin is a strong word. The 2JZ is a proven platform that makes incredible power. I'm pretty sure this same argument starts on every forum but it's all a matter of opinion. Both are awesome and reliable, both make power....neither would ruin a car with the swap.

All depends what OP is looking for. If he's just going to swap stock-for-stock. The 2JZ is a more powerful engine in its stock form.

If we're talking swap + mods, of course the LSX will have better (read: cheaper, more readily available) aftermarket support.

There's already the BRZ06, maybe OP just wanted to go a unique route.

An SR20DET or 3SGTE would be an interesting swap.

That was discussed. Depending on the power levels I will be looking at. There was talk of a Supra rear end as well but also keeping it the same as the car could handle some those power levels. Trying to keep it mainly street and not drag too much

^^^This is true. And an LS motor would be fun but like I have said it just has been done too much and that really isn't my cup of tea.

^^I did. And the block will stay stock as in stock form these engines can put out very good power (up to mid 700s I believe) and my goals will be around mid to upper 500s and mid 600s on kill mode (E85 or C16). The car is still light even with the added weight from this motor and will still make a good street warrior in my opinion. Until the build is done I am still going to have fun with the car in the hills

buddy has a 7m and a 1j sitting in his garage (well 1j is sitting in a mk3 atm) but when putting on the exhaust on my frs we pondered how well either would work in the frs

got a 2j (non turbo) sitting in atlanta we can pick up at any time, with a little work it could be a boost monster. buuuuut, i'll stick with the stock engine for the moment heh.

looking forward to seeing how this turns out!
