Parking lot hooliganism and police in GTA

I want to drive my FR-S the way it was intended to be. For obvious reasons I want to learn in a parking lot, rather than the road, before I track it and look stupid spinning out. Has anyone in the GTA had trouble drifting in a parking lot from the YRP?

I can't exactly remember the correct way to word it but some parking lots can have the HTA applied and that means dangerous driving and careless driving/stunt driving can be applied. Also if it doesn't the worse thing you could be charged with is trespassing

Just remember to make a full stop when coming out of the parking lot onto the street.

Any beginner Auto-X events in the GTA? That might be a beginner-friendly forum.
They are usually run in a large lot, well organized and set-up with rules/safety in mind.

AutoX in the GTA include the PITL and TLMC series. Check the CASC forums for more information.

In terms of getting in trouble with the police....if they drive by and see you fooling around in the parking lot, you're going to get questioned.

The HTA is generally not applied on private property parking lots...but dangerous driving can which is a criminal charge. But they'd have to prove that there is a risk to property or other people. If you're fooling around in a large parking lot with no nearby curbs/poles, away from people then you should be fine in terms of dangerous driving.

And of course they can charge you with trespassing...whether it will hold up in court is a separate issue.

I would just play around in big factory lots/docks on the weekend where theres a lot of space, away from the main roads. Also dont leave tire marks everywhere...because property owners will get pissed off...

Save it for winter. Your tires will love you more.

For summer, go to an autox event. Otherwise, google search drift training schools. There are lots around since the sport has gained popularity. And these guys will teach you how to do it in an environment that doesn't involve you wrapping your car around a light post or getting arrested.

Don't try to learn it on your own. Have an instructor teach you. There are many driver training schools that cater to lapping specifically. Check Ian Law racing aka Car Control School. He's a professional.

You should definitely do it legally and either start with auto-x or an HDPE with an instructor.

PITL is great in the GTA and it's only $40 for a whole day including lunch. Last week we had 5 or 6 BRZ/FRS at the event.

Touge.ca also has cheap track events (~$100) and you can just go out and do some laps at your own pace, although their safety protocols concern me a little bit.

This is another good driving school http://hansoninternationaldriving.com/
I've seen quite a few FR-S at their events lately. Pricing is very reasonable. There's a school coming up on August 9th.

Ya, I went to this...twice actually. A great school with access to a skid pad for "drifting".

Sure, schools aren't "cheap" but it's sure as hell cheaper than writting your car off learning on your own...

As much as I enjoy playing Forza, it's not the same. You can't feel the back end slowly start to slide and you can't feel the forces effecting you as you do.

It's hard to not leave black marks from drifting, especially on the stock tire

It's going away for winter

I can't afford a course, I'm only 20 and can afford the car because I live at home. I don't have time this season for auto-x and I want something I can do for 10 minutes and go, not walk around picking up cones all day then driving for 10 minutes all day. Part of it is when I do auto-x next year, or maybe a HPDE, I want to have some idea of what I'm doing and not look like an idiot spinning out.

I have more respect for people that come out to autoslalom events, spin out their car, and learn how little they know about their driving skill, rather than someone who goes to an empty parking lot and perpetuates the stereotype that we're all hooligans and street racers.

You'd be surprised how much you will learn at an autoslalom, even if you think you only get 10 minutes of seat time. And trust me, the people there won't give two shits if you spin out because that's why you're there - to learn how much you don't know about your driving skill so you can improve on it.
