Best tires for the stock wheels?

Note: I have very little knowledge about wheels and tires.

I like the stock wheels. What would be the best daily tires to put on them? Can I put wider tires on them to enhance traction and grip? Also, please give an estimated price as I don't want to break the bank.

I run 225/45r17 Dunlop Z1 StarSpecs on a set of stock wheels for autox. They fit with no problems.

I probably wouldn't run anything wider than 225 on the stock wheels personally.

How is it for daily use? And how much for 4? Actually, to revise my post, I only need the tires for daily driving, not for the track since I plan on getting 2x spares with used tires to burn off the skid pad.

I had them on my previous daily drivers and love them. There's a bit of road noise, but I got used to it. Cheapest I used to get them for was $450 installed. Not sure how much they go for nowadays.

"best tire" will entirely depend on your definition of "breaking the bank"... you can find any tire on Tire Rack for comparison purposes.

Frankly, anything will be better than what came stock on the car. As for what is good or not, that's entirely subjective.

Sizes, stick with factory size if you want a good balance of mileage/performance. Go up to 225/45-17 if you want more meat.

z1 star specs are being phased out.

i run re070's and like them a lot. i cant comment on z1's, rs-3's, or rivals. Theyre all around $650 shipped before mounting

The tires mentioned above are all very good tires, but I wouldn't use any of these on my car due to their weight alone. In P225/45-17 these tires weigh:

Dunlop Z1 StarSpecs = 27 pounds each
Bridgestone RE070 = 27 pounds each
Michelin pilot super sports = 22 pounds each
Yokohama AD08R = 24 pounds each

The stock 205/45-17 Primacy are 20 pounds per tire.

The Dunlop Sport Maxx R weigh 18 pounds each and Continental Extremecontact DW are 20 pounds each. Both are well suited to the car.

A guy at my local club has them, he's got raving reviews on them.

So I bought 225/40R18 when I changed my wheels. These tires are great. I highly recommend them.

To each their own, but this review killed the thought of the maxx rt's instantly for me

Folks, there are a lot of great tires out there and sadly, this is not one of them. Don't make the same mistake I did in buying these tires! The ultimate grip is medium high, and the tire has a very linear communication of slip. That's the only good thing about them. The bad: They flat-spot easily in the garage overnight (65F concrete), and take some time to roll out. They are pretty noisy right out of the box and did not seem to get much better - a noticeable growl on the highway. They have very poor lateral response - a significant lag/roll in turn-in response. Also have quite a bit of squirm under braking. I did a track day at Thunderhill, and these tires really disappointed. On a very mild summer day, the RF blistered/chunked the outside tread shoulder, after three sessions. In my opinion, this tire should not be categorized as a Max Performance Summer (which includes some fantastic tires like the Bridgestone S04 PP, and Michelin Pilot PSS) The Sport Maxx RT is fine for an inexperienced driver on the street, but it's not up to the task of driving a modern sedan or sports car at the limit. If you are looking for a value priced performance tire, check out the Kumho Ecsta SPT - blows this Dunlop away in every category.

I anticipate 0% track use in my future. The rest of the review (flat spotting overnight) just reeks of BS.

Lightweight tires tend to have poor response and flatspot issues. The tires are light because they have paper thin sidewalls and thin carcasses. This lends to the issues above.

Best to stick to a known good tire if you want excellent performance.

Come on, tires that flat spot over night...on a 2700 pound car...from Dunlop. No. I have not experienced this or any poor performance for average street driving. Of course, my point of reference on this car are the OEM Primacy.

Yes, the weight in a tire is mostly a result of the steel belts and the durometer of the rubber. But what's better for the street; a tire that has a less precise turn-in (a subjective point and only really noticeable during a direct comparison) or a tire that is the MOST precise but at the expense of acceleration and transient response.

Probably the best compromise are the Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 (22 lbs) or the Pirelli P Zero (21 Lbs). without a significant increase in torque (180 lb-ft or more) it's hard to justify a 25-27 lb tire.
