Yeah that may be the next step. I need to machine the motor shaft. What were actually thinking of doing is hooking up the motor, chucking it in the lathe and machine the shaft with the motor's own power.

What will you be using as a power source? Or have you not decided yet?

For initial testing I'll be using a LiPo pack which will be located in the inside the car. LiPo is not suited for use in the engine bay due to the chance of thermal runaway so it will probably be lead acid batteries for the final system, but I'm still looking at different options.

I always wondered how can a electrical supercharger be really efficient.
Starting from the fact that if you take power from the stock alternator you won't have enough boost to note any difference, I'm guessing such a system should include a different power source (a battery pack). The charge should be anough to use the compressor a few times, like a "boost button". But isn't it just a less efficient version of a electric KERS? After all the KERS transfer power directly to the wheels or gearbox, a much more direct route. Are there any calculation of the kind of power you can get and for how much time, based on a reasonably sized battery pack that can fit in the car? |

I don't think the goal here is efficiency, it's just power! Powah!!

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39719 It's not easy to do, and there's a million scams out there. But it CAN be done, and is being made available in a reasonable kit for the first time. Rather than running off-topic in this thread, go to the one I linked and all your questions will be answered. Separate power source. Available whenever you want it. Works quite nicely.

Got it, if you use the correct battery (charged from a source off the car like a wall plug) and a time-limited boost it's physically possibile. Thanks for the link.

No, charged by the alternator but after the foot comes off the gas so there is no heavy load on it.

Think of it kind of like a hybrid you charge when demand is low and give back when demand is high.
The difference being with this you're going for extra power not extra MPG. My proof of concept will just use a pre-charged battery with no on board charging system, but if it works a charging system will be the next step.

It's charged from the car (when not under boost) and provides boost for as long as you'd like (so far as we've been able to use on the street). Please go read. You'll be pleasantly surprised. No more responses in this thread! By all means, post more questions in the other one. |

I saw that episode and couldn't help but facepalm
While the theory was sound, the "more blowers = better" idea was bad. Especially since all the piping was the same size. In order to get the flow from those 5 blowers they should have probably had a 6 or 8 inch pipe going past the driver into the engine. Leaf blowers aren't designed to sustain pressure, the clearances on the impeller aren't tight enough. This isn't a leaf blower, it's a compressor Also, 15 feet of charge tube is kind of silly from a fluid dynamics losses point of view. |
