So the new Impreza FB20 takes synthetic 0W-20 oil. Safe to assume the AS1 will as well?

Straight moonshine. The car will practically drive it's self after a quart or two.

Back to the topic at hand, I will use the recommended weight and buy conventional oil from mobil. I'll change it at the recommended intervals. These cars are actually designed for conventional oil, anyone ever think about that? They are designed for what most people are going to put in them. There is no advantage in street cars to use synthetic.

Many cars are now designed for synthetic oil; namely the Subaru FB20 which the FA20 is based off of.

According to bobistheoilguy at least, synthetics take much longer to thicken, so they do last longer...and they are thinner when cold, so less engine wear.

I have no idea where you got this information, but it's 100% wrong.

  1. There is no such idea as "designed for regular oil". What is designed into the engine is the grade of oil, assuming stock bearing clearances.
  2. There is absolutely an advantage to running synthetic. If the car is tracked or autocrossed, the oil will last substantially longer with a good quality synthetic. It's not a voodoo science. A higher quality oil can also reduce the oil temperature (friction makes heat).
A good quality synthetic will allow extended oil drain intervals as well. I have been forming a regimen based on my Blackstone Oil Analysis, something that every serious owner should do.
