^^ my point exactly, and I have plenty of lawyer friends that need to eat (off Subaru) if they want to screw me over.

Getting pretty tired of all the unqualified advice in these threads, and the threads in general.
You can do it the way the manual says, and it could save you a lot of heartache down the road. Or you could listen to people who post on internet forums with their online degrees in mechanical engineering saying it's a worthless lawyer label. Do the break in properly and you won't have to worry if you're the reason why the thing's got reliability issues down the road. You can always be more conservative or do it longer, it won't hurt it. But honestly, in the big scheme of things, you're break-in will take a month or two AT MOST. You're going to own the car for years if you're most people. Be patient, do the break-in. |

You won't break your engine not following the breaking in guidelines. You won't even void your warranty as Subaru won't be covering the car by the time the wear shows up.
You probably won't experience the damage you do as likely some poor sap will buy the car used at 60,000 miles and it will begin to burn oil copiously for him. Of course, if that purchaser has a compression test done properly before he buys your old wreck then he won't buy it. But, really, what kind of maroon deliberately abuses a new engine? Skilled drivers break in their cars, their tires and their brakes properly as directed by the manufacturers. You can actually feel these components improve as you do so. Only an idiots fails to do so and then may wonder why they crashed or ended up with the only oil burner on their block. I've broken in over ten new engines and finished breaking in a couple of used engines that were excessively babied. All have run high mileages without developing oil burning habits including, amazingly, three Italian engines. The recommendations for every one of those engines were the same recommendations Subaru gives. |

I drove the car home from Colorado, so the drive home covered my break-in period.
What will happen down the road is one of two things: - I keep the car past extended warranty (100k), mod it and make it into a track car - I sell it before the extended warranty expires (~3 years), don't worry about it Either way, the buyer (or myself) will get actual useful info on the engine via compression/leakdown testing, as well as dyno and oil analysis info. All this is backed up by receipts and mileage tracking (Fuelly). At the end of the day, I'm not worried about this and I know my rights when it comes to warranty. -alex |

Otherwise you have no wear rings in each bore that may break your rings and yes, Subaru can then prove you wrecked your engine and deny warranty. |
