Suggestion: Newb forum

So now that the car has been out almost a year there are a lot of repeat threads and questions getting asked and ruffling some feathers. One of the worst flaming Subi site has a dedicated newb forum where flaming and angry responses have zero tolerance. I think that it would help keep our community nicer for a while. lol. People that want to help can go answer questions and others can avoid dealing with it.

Bump. This is becoming more and more of an issue in the general forum it seems.

Of course it is. There are a lot of new owners and many of them are not used to how forums work in the first place. Will this solve the issue? I doubt it. Even if directed to post in a 'newb forum', they will probably still post in the general forum here first and the mods will move them as needed and remove the most flaming results.

With the exception of a few, I find most members here are very tolerant of repeat questions and do their best to help the new members. And even with a year of 'knowledge' about the cars, there are always things to be learned unless someone is so full of themselves that they think they know it all.

Brzerhood suggests calling it the Seagulls nest, but jest aside I think that now that I am back, I will get started in our wiki project and hope that solves the problem. I still think its unlikely but I hope it alleviates this issue.

It works on nasioc, and that site is full of the biggest tools around. That's where I got the idea. And yes most people on here are helpful, but the number of ranting posts is growing. This is more of a preventative measure I feel before the site gets to a point people are afraid to post.

Bump with this excerpt from a post I just made in the main FRS forum. Same threads over and again now. Some in the correct subforum which makes it better, but not all are. A Newb forum could have a read this post sticky with all the common stuff. If you need an example check out Nasioc, the land of trolls.

I'm just tired of the same threads over and over. Can we get a newb subforum yet for posts like this? It's new to them but it's been the same for over a year for many. It's this or my airbag light goes off when i put my phone on the seat or I JUST GOT MY FRS!!!!.

The main forum should be information pertinent to the whole community, like new car specs, event info, etc. A newb forum would be the correct place for stuff like this.

people need to learn to read

if anything, introduce a minimum post count required to make new threads. Like 100.

99% of the information is regurgitated, if they are old enough to drive a car, they are old enough to use their brains, or more specifically the search function.

don't make it easier for them.

reward inquisitiveness and punish stupidity

but everyone is too nice for that, it seems

Doesn't work. Then you get people spamming the forum with useless shit just so they can post a new thread. Then the mods work OT cleaning out even more useless crap than the total amount of people bitching that OP DIDN'T SEARCH LAWL or some other equally stupid waste of time.

This idea, while nice on paper, depends on people actually reading it. Most people don't even bother with stickies, so who knows if they would go to a n00b forum.

Like I said, check out nasioc. Its full of dbags but the newb forum is the safe haven. People dont read, but it would help a little. Reference is classifieds to post a response, plus its something to come up in a search.

I agree you cant set post limits, cuz it would create spamming like you said. Its what happens when you put post counts in to post in classifieds.

I know I dont know everything and do like to help others when they need it, we all should, but i like to able to know thats what Im doing and not when I have 10 minutes to kill and want to surf the forum

I'm a moderator on another non car-related forum, and the issue with a newbie section is that very few of the experienced members go there to answer questions, as they also have their own questions which they ask in the other sections. let's face it, most senior members will seldom go into a newbie section, unless they have a lot of time on their hands. as a result, newbie will try posting their questions a few times, no one will answer, then they'll just post them again in the other sections so they'll get noticed, and of course told to use the 'search 'function.

it's nice in theory, and if you have a lot of senior members who are looking to mentor new ones, but in practice it hasn't worked well from my experience.

I'm very familiar with NASIOC... and a lot of car forums out there for that matter. I'm just speaking from experience as an ex-mod on another site. People just don't want to read. I guess not spouting off SEARCH NOOB is sort of a maturity thing, because it used to annoy me too seeing the same questions over and over. Now it's not worth my time getting bothered by it. Either close the thread or answer their question and move on.

Just guide them to the holy "Search" function. Lol

If that's too hard for them to understand, I think creating a "noob" section is a waste of bandwidth if there are already existing threads.
