My thoughts exactly. I will still be watching this thread closely, however.

More tuning options are a great thing, especially when they are significantly cheaper then EcuTek, but we need pro tuners to adopt this and make canned tunes for those of us with no idea what they are doing.

Worst case it can be done manually since the def's can be edited with tuner pro. The raw rom, minus the boot loader, is already posted on romraider and the tables list is already defined (just the raw tables with no scaling or units or names etc).

These guys don't care what tool you use to edit maps, they just want to sell the hardware so this should be the first time an editable and viewable deff will be available.

If there is no way to encrypt a tune, there is nothing to stop a guy from sharing his purchased canned tune with his buddies, so if pro tuners get involved with this, I would imagine it would only be on a per car basis on a dyno or by e-tuning so they would be less likely to get shared. They would also probably not be cheap for that same reason.

Okay so I'm getting a better idea of how tunes are created and shared on this platform.

Will there be some kind of shared repository created eventually for everyone to share their tunes and collaborate to make edits on them?

Some guys will share, some want to keep any edge they can get, so who knows.
This forum for the most part is pretty good about helping each other out in the interest of making the twins the best platform out there so it is possible.

I'm sure someone can set something up fairly easily if it comes to that.

Most WRX/STi tuners tune and flash with open/free software today and can't protect their maps, so maybe the same thing will happen with this, but we will see. So far the ecosystem for this car is people have a way to protect their tunes so they use that method.

I know a lot of WRX/STi guys would love to have a device like this to switch open source maps as opposed to having to carry around a laptop.

It is interesting the device manufacturer does make sure the same device can't be used on multiple cars, but has no provisions for the maps tuners create. It would take some kind of program to sign a tune file based on the device it's being placed on, similar to how Ecutek does it.

that is because unlike ecutek they are actually selling a product... ecutek provides you nothing, the tuner does.

Exactly. There will be a download site for off-the-shelf maps. Free download for tuning software as well. The off-the-shelf maps can be uploaded as-is. Or they can be custom tuned/modified as the user/tuner sees fit. This model has worked very well in the Suburu/Evo (and now BMW) communities and we hope it works equally well here

Vishnu Tuning is in the process of calibrating the initial off-the-shelf maps. They have a pretty long history of tuning Subaru. In fact, for a few years back in the early 2000s, they were the largest US dealer of Unichip and Ecutek. We encourage other tuners to develop their own off-the-shelf maps too. The OpenFlash Tablet will soon be available to tuning shops (for resale).

That's the problem. Subaru, Honda, DSM, all the domestics, and on and on don't worry about that. Why the hell are we? It's a non-existent problem invented by Ecutek to herd their tuners away from free options. That's fine, but we as consumers need to show them we aren't willing to pay for their restrictions.
